Tutorial Tuesday – DIY Hair Detox Mask

When we hear the word detox we think of body cleansing. We think of cleaning the blood in your body, of removing impurities, of a 3 day detox or a 7 day detox. Nonetheless, the trend and usage of detox methods is ever-growing and has tapped into the hair care market.

Different activities in your daily life can impact the health of your hair. Mineral impurities can affect the hair’s protein structure leading to significant hair damage and even UV rays make the list for causes of hair damage. With different hair products, hair treatments and hair care systems there has to be a way to stop this cycle of hair damage.

This quick tutorial on a DIY hair detox treatment requires bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar and aloe vera gel. There are many recipes available but they all use bentonite clay because of its ability to draw out toxins and excess oils from your hair and scalp. It has also been used for skin detox treatments.

You will need:

  • Bentonite Clay Powder
  • Aloe Vera Gel
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Bowl
  • Shower CapTT-hair-detox

Step 1: Begin by mixing ½ cup of bentonite clay, ½ cup of aloe vera gel and ¼ of apple cider vinegar in a bowl. Make sure to mix it really well.

Step 2: Work the mixture into your hair. Put on a shower cap and wait 20-30 minutes but make sure that the mask does not dry on your hair.

Step 3: Rinse with the remaining 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and let it sit for 1 – 3 minutes.

Step 4: Shampoo and you’re done!

P.S. It is suggested to finish with a shine boost rinse. There are many natural recipes available. Want to suggest some? Comment on our Facebook page or tweet us with your suggestion!

Get This Look – New York Fashion Week

We have finally selected one of our favorite makeup looks from last week’s New York Fashion Week!

The winner is…

Herve Leger by Max Azria!!!

Fall-2014-NYFWThe makeup artist, Val Garland, wanted the makeup to reflect the futuristic and technological feel and look of the line.

The features of the look include a double-lined cat eye and a sleek, high ponytail. It was accented by a glossy lip and flawless skin.

Garland used airbrush makeup for the application of foundation and highlighter, gloss for the lips and a black liner.

To easily recreate the double-lined cat eye, we suggest using a gel or cream eyeliner like e.l.f. Cream Eyeliner in black. The texture of a gel or cream eyeliner allows you to create defined and precise lines that are crucial for this look.

Begin by lining your top lid as if creating a normal cat eye – be sure to make it flick. You can then proceed in two ways:

1. Begin in the middle of the crease of your eye and connect it to the line you created previously

or

2. Begin from the end of the cat eye line and draw the second line towards the middle of your eye crease as in the the diagram below.

  • Hair ties and/or headbands
  • Towel
  • TonerDIY-green-tea-steam

Step 1: Clean canvas. Make sure to clean your face. This way the steam will effectively open your pores.

Step 2: Boil. Bring about 4 cups of water to a boil and add the green tea bags or green tea leaves and let it steep until the water is the tea’s green-yellow color.

Step 3: Oil up. Remove the cooking pot/saucepan and add ONLY 3-4 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Step 4: Pony up. Use the hair ties to put your hair in a ponytail or bun and the headband if you have bangs. You want to have your hair away from your face.

Step 5: Build a fort. For the steam to have the full effect, lean over the saucepan or pot and put a towel over your head. If the steam is too hot, let some steam out and then proceed. Let them steam open your pores for five or ten minutes.

Step 6: Tone. After the five or ten minutes, rinse your face with cool water. PAT dry and apply a toner.

The green tea’s antioxidants will help you obtain a healthy and dewy glow and the essential oils will help you relax.

Skin Care Mantra: Skin Type NOT Skin Color

Skin CareIn the spirit of skin care do’s and don’ts, we would like to take this moment to put to rest a myth  regarding skin care for people of different ethnicities.

African American, Latina, Asian, Caucasian – if there is something all races and ethnicities have in common is skin. Thus, think skin type not skin color when determining your skin care routine and product selection.

Practice this mantra:

Skin type, not skin color. Skin type, not skin color.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Darker skin tones means there is a higher concentration of melanin.
  • Darker skin is at a higher risk of spotted pigmentation caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation, also known as photodamage.
  • When skin cancer is diagnosed in people of color, it is in a more advanced stage with a higher mortality rate.
  • Skin cell turnover tends to be quicker in people of color.

So what products will you need?

A mild facial cleanser, exfoliator and a daily broad spectrum facial lotion.

Consider what needs your skin has and look for products that will address those skin care concerns. An exfoliator is key because of the quick skin cell turnover. To avoid a dull skin appearance, exfoliate a few times a week and enjoy the glow emanating from your skin. A facial lotion that protects against UV rays will help protect against spotted pigmentation and skin cancer.

Of course, this is not to say that some products will provide more benefits for your skin than others.  What works for you may not work for your friend, even if you are of the same race and ethnic background.

Stay beautiful!
