Quick Beauty Tip: Strengthen Weak Nails

As a nail polish aficionado, the amount of times I paint my nails, use nail polish remover and repaint on a monthly basis can’t be healthy for my nails.

In fact, nails that are exposed to that many chemicals can become brittle and weak over time.

quicktip-strengthen-nails

There are many nail strengtheners available:

  • OPI Original Nail Envy Strengthener
  • Formula X Strengthen Nail Strengthener
  • Sally Hansen Complete Care 4-in-1 Nail Treatment

But there are also steps you can take and home remedies that will do the trick.

Preventative Care:

Biotin is a known supplement that has proven to improve nail health. Nails take about six months to replace themselves so it will take a few months before the biotin supplements begin showing results.

Avoid acrylics completely. If the thought is to much for you to bear, then reduce the number of times you get acrylic nails done. The results will be significant and your nails will thank you.

Don’t peel off your nail polish. The peeling damages your nail by stripping the initial layers.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. The number of times you wash your hands to the number of times you use hand sanitzer can also affect your nail health.

Home Remedies:

Olive oil and coconut oil are your best friends. Extra virgin please.

Option 1: Soak your nails for 10-15 minutes every day in olive oil. Do this for a month then twice a week afterwards. Olive oil will help to strengthen nails that are weak and promote nail growth.

Option 2: Massage coconut oil on your nails and hands, focusing on your nail bed and cuticles. Do this every day before bedtime. Put on cotton gloves afterwards to keep them moisturized throughout the night.

Spring Cleaning 101: The Makeup Version

Spring has sprung. Flowers will bloom. That means spring cleaning has begun!

Your skin care and beauty routine should be altered when seasons change, period. Climate heavily influences your skin’s oil production, for example, which in turn affects the type of moisturizer you should use, the type of foundation, powder, and so on.

With new spring beauty trends and summer trends on the rise, take this opportunity to freshen up your cosmetics bag as well!

PREPARE: If you’re methodical and careful, your makeup products should have a longer life span. This means cleaning brushes daily, deep cleaning brushes weekly, keeping products moisture free and stored at room temperature. Don’t add unnecessary bacteria to your eye makeup and tools either (i.e. touching, licking).

STEP 1: Spick-and-span. Wash your makeup bag. We mean soap, wash and dry before replenishing it with cosmetics galore.

STEP 2: Say no to hoarding. Be honest about which items you will use.

STEP 3: Instincts and tingling senses. If you are unable to recall the last time you used it or when you bought it, chances are it has to go. Another telling sign – consistency and smell. Any changes in consistency, separation of nail polishes or weird smells from any of your products means its new home should be the trash.

STEP 4: Be in the know. Makeup and skin care products do expire.

  • Foundations, concealers and cream blushes should last about one year if you’re not dipping your finger into the actual product. If you’re a hands on person, it may need to be changed sooner.Mascara should be changed every three months. It’s dark and moist in the container – everything bacteria needs to harvest a full and fruitful life – and that is something your eyes should steer far from. Toss it out. It’s okay.
  • Powders, blushes, bronzers, eye shadow and eye liner should last about one year and a half. Pencil eye liner should be sharpened before each use to create a fresh, clean surface before applying it near your eyes.
  • Liquid eye liners last about half a year.
  • Lipsticks and lip glosses last about one year and a half to two years. Long lasting lipsticks have shorter life spans though.

STEP 5: Out with the old, in with the new. Switch up your moisturizers if needed. Dry climates call for moisturizers that are for dry skin. Usually they have more oil in the formulas. In humid climates, moisturizers with humectants are best. Look for moisturizers that are noncomedogenic (doesn’t clog pores). Those used by those with normal to oily or oily skin that are oil-free work best.

STEP 6: Wipe it down. Before putting any cosmetics into your cosmetic bag, make sure you disinfect all the containers of your makeup.

Quick Beauty Tip – Coconut Oil Hair Mask

quicktip-coconut-oil-hair-maskIt is the week of coconut oil and all its glory!

For today’s quick beauty tip we focused on reversing damage on your color-treated hair or if you excessively use heat to style.

We want to make sure that all the “beautistas” out there can try a variety of looks and hairstyles while maintaining your locks healthy!

You will need:

  • Coconut Oil (extra virgin oil preferred)
  • Towel
  • Shower Cap(optional)
  • Clip

Make sure your hair is dry before applying the coconut oil

Scoop out coconut oil onto your hands and rub your hands together so the oil begins to melt.

Saturate your hair with coconut oil starting from the scalp all the way to your ends. Pay special attention to your ends! This is how you can target split ends and dry ends.

Comb through your hair and then clip oiled hair at the top of your head.

Wet the towel and heat it up in the microwave for about 30 seconds or until hot. You want to wrap the hot towel around your head. If you need to clip it to keep in place, do so. The heat will help the coconut oil work more effectively and deep down in your hair.

Use the shower cap to maintain the heat longer.

Wear the mask for about 30 minutes and then shampoo and condition regularly. (If you need to wash rinse and repeat, do so! You want to make sure you get all the oil out.)

All done!

You should see the results immediately and for a long period of time if you are consistent with it but don’t apply this mask more than twice a week.

Tutorial Tuesday – Cara Delevingne’s Braided Undercut

Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Aniston and Cara Delevingne – what do they all have in common? The braided undercut.

The undercut is a look that was very popular where hair on the side of your head is shaved off.

TT-Cara-Braided-Undercut

Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Cassie and many more went bold with the real undercut but for those more attached to their hair than others – the braided undercut is great for an alternative look.

Whether you’re going for a punk look, like Cara did in the 2013 MET Ball, this hairstyle is great for all outings. Beach day, date night, girls night out – you name it and you can use it.

We searched high and low for the best technique to recreate this hairstyle!

You will need:

  • Hair Spray
  • Bobby Pins
  • Hair Elastic
  • Hair Texturizer/Styling Pomade

Instructions:

Step 1: Use the arch of your eyebrow as a guide. You want to create a deep side part that aligns with your arch..

Step 2: Lightly spritz the side of your hair with the most hair with a water mist or texturizer. You can put it in a bun to help create waves and to keep it from interfering with your braid.

Step 3: The side with less hair is where the braided undercut will go. This section will have the braid begin from the temple to the crown and then straight down behind your ear. Apply a small amount of a styling pomade or paste to give it texture. This will allow your hair to be easier to work with.

Step 4: Make a horizontal french braid. Once you reach your ear, start angling it down. You want it to curve as in Cara Delevingne’s braid.

Step 5: When you reach the nape of your neck, tie the braided section with a hair elastic. For added security, use a bobby pin by sliding it in through the elastic and into your hair.

Step 6: Finish with a hair spray over the braided section. Let loose your bun, add a small amount of hair spray and scrunch with your hands.

P.S. Try to keep the braided undercut area smooth for  an even closer resemblance to a real undercut! It will add more edge to your look!

Rough texture makes this look versatile for anything so don’t fret if the side with the waves looks like you woke up from a nap.

The Many Uses of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has many health and beauty benefits.

It is part of many diets and fitness plans as an alternative to butter for cooking and as a supplement for daily energy.  To be specific one to two tablespoons a day is beneficial but as with all, don’t overdo it!

coconut oilFor your beauty needs, we suggest organic coconut oil. If you will be putting these uses to the test, organic coconut oil will ensure that you are not absorbing any toxins through your skin.

Let’s begin with the skin benefits this natural moisturizer provides!

  • Used as a lotion: Coconut oil is safe for application on your entire body. Focus on your knees, heels and elbows!
  • Eye-makeup remover: Be sure to wash your face afterwards as well with your favorite cleanser.
  • Prevents stretch marks during pregnancy: We suggest applying it daily during your pregnancy.
  • Nighttime facial moisturizer: Use a small amount and be sure to wash off in the morning.
  • Natural shaving cream and after shave lotion: It’s a shaving cream and moisturizer all in one!
  • Cuticle cream
  • Clear cold sores (We were surprised too!)
  • Use it as a bath oil: Use ½ a cup in your warm bath water to soak in. It will help seal in moisture but will make your bathtub slipper so be careful!

Coconut oil is also great for maintaining your hair healthy and frizz-free.

  • Use it as a serum: Coconut oil can be applied to your ends and worked through your hair to prevent flyaways.
  • Stimulate hair growth: Massage into your scalp small amounts of coconut oil daily to help stimulate hair growth.
  • Remove lice: If you have young kids, you know the struggle there is to maintain them lice-free. Rinse the hair with apple cider vinegar but don’t shampoo or condition. Let the hair dry. Apply coconut oil on the hair – the idea is for the hair to be completely cloaked in it. Apply a shower cap and wait. You want the lice to be smothered so make it a game for your kids to keep the shower cap on!

Let us know if you have any suggestions as well! Did you try any of these out? Do you have any modifications? We want to know!

Get The Look: Oscars 2014 – Lupita Nyong’o

On Sunday, March 2nd, 2014, the Oscars Academy Awards presented to us shining moments in speeches, skits, performances and beauty looks.

There were so many great looks in style, hair and makeup that it was hard to choose just one.

Lupita Nyong’o is the winner!

With her flawless, baby blue Prada gown and the movie star, fresh makeup look – Lupita owned the Oscars 2014.

GTL-lupita-nyongo

Her makeup artist, Nick Barose, stated he was inspired by Elizabeth Taylor and it shows – strong eyebrows and blush and lipstick tones that were soft in hue on Lupita’s skin.

Barose used Chanel products to complete the look.

Here’s how we recreated it!

EYEBROWS:

For the bold eyebrows, Barose used Chanel Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil. He didn’t want to overdo it and rightly so! We would use TIGI Cosmetics Brow Pencil.

  •  Fill in your eyebrows with thin strokes. You want to enhance them while maintaining a natural look.
  • Use the brush application to help blend the color and comb the brow hairs.

EYES:

Barose focused on durability preparing for tears of joy – we hope!  Using waterproof mascara and liquid eyeliner, it was still subtle. He also used an eye shadow palette that had light pink, beige, black and silver hues.

FACE:

Barose used orange lipstick and orange blush. On Lupita’s skin, the orange is subtle and gives a great glow!

Use TIGI Cosmetics Blush in Awaken and a glossy orange liptstick to bring the look together! If you would prefer pink hues, try the blush in Brilliance.

DRESS AND ACCESSORIES:

Her accessories were kept simple. Try using a thin headband as well!

Nordstrom’s Skinny Crystal Neon Headband will add just the touch,

For the dress, we loved this Forever 21 maxi dress. The deep v neckline is not as plunging as in the prada gown but the open back shows the right amount of skin.

What did you think of Lupita’s look? Did you try this out? Share and tag us!

Quick Beauty Tip – Prevent Ingrown Hairs

There is nothing that can ruin a new wax, fresh shave or recent tweezing than the appearance of ingrown hairs. Hairs that are growing out but have curled to grow back into your skin are called ingrown hairs. It causes skin irritation that resembles a pimple or just a raised, red bump.

quicktip-ingrown-hair

The best way to prevent ingrown hairs is to exfoliate. The reason hairs may grow back into the skin is because the pores are clogged. Dead skin cells and oils can trap the hair follicle by clogging your pores anywhere that you regularly shave, wax or tweeze.

You can purchase exfoliating body scrubs to help avoid ingrown hairs. For sensitive areas, like the bikini area, there are scrubs formulated with natural ingredients and gentle beads that will safely exfoliate without irritation.

Many are also a fan of dry brushing. Purchase a dry brush from your local drugstore and massage the brush in circles starting from feet upwards. Dry brushing helps remove dead skin cells, make skin brighter and even helps tone. By dry brushing before your shower, you can ensure that ingrown hairs will reduce in frequency.

Do you have any tips to prevent ingrown hairs? Let us know!

Already have ingrown hairs? Try lotions and treatments that are specially formulated to help free the hair from growing back into the skin and reduce the irritation.
