Quick Beauty Tip – Gel Mani Recovery Soak

Gel manicures look amazing and the no-chipping for two to three weeks makes this worth our money and time. The downside?

Gel manicures involve UV exposure to dry the gel and when it’s time to remove them, it can leave your nails weak, thin and prone to peeling. (It’s even worse if you peel off the gel polish!)

Along with keeping them short and letting your nails breathe from gel polish to help them recover, nail soaks are also extremely beneficial.

For thin, brittle nails a nail strengthening soak is required.

quicktip-soak

You Will Need:

  • 1 Tablespoon of Honey
  • 2 Eggs
  • ¼ Cup of Milk
  • Bowl

Instructions:

STEP 1: Separate the egg yolks from the egg and beat the egg yolks.

STEP 2: Mix the honey and milk with the beaten egg yolks thoroughly in a bowl.

STEP 3: Make sure your nails are bare (no polish) and soak them in the mixture for about 15 minutes.

Why This Helps:

The calcium in milk, the protein in eggs and the hydrating components of honey will help your nails and cuticles heal and stronger. This soak should be done at least once a week to boost recovery.

Tutorial Tuesday – Fishtail Twist

TT-fishtailtwistThis summer, we are a fan of all things braided for hairstyles. This one in particular is great for any situation – summer party, summer wedding (can you tell we are loving this for summer?).

NOTE: We suggest using clear elastics for a discreet look.

Instructions:

Step 1: Blow dry and straighten your hair. For a beachy look, add curls and waves.

Step 2: Take two sections above each ear and twist them backward.

Step 3: Once the two sections meet, secure the two strands with an elastic.

Step 4: Create a fishtail braid with the hair from the two twisted sections. To make sure the braid stays put, use a thin hair elastic at the end. (If you need a fishtail braid tutorial, follow these instructions.) Remove the first elastic.

Step 5: Spritz a shine spray and hairspray so your style lasts all night.

Tutorial Tuesday – Burn Relief

We recently tackled this summer’s bandit – sunburns – what it can cause. For serious burns that sting, try this remedy.

You will need:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Water
  • 100% Pure Coconut Oil
  • Old T- Shirt
  • Spray Bottle/Washcloth

TT-burnrelief

Instructions:

Note: The apple cider portion can be done at any point during the day for pain relief. The oil portion should be done before bed.

Step 1: To address the pain, mix ¼ of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of cold water in a spray bottle or bowl. Shake the bottle or mix the two liquids really well.

Step 2: Spray it liberally over your sunburned skin. If using a washcloth, dampen the washcloth with the mixture and dab it on. Let it dry.

Step 3: After the apple cider vinegar and water mixture has dried, use your fingers to apply the coconut oil. The coconut oil will begin to melt as you rub it gently on your sunburned skin. Use a paper towel to catch the falling drops. The oil will help your skin heal but needs time for absorption, thus this should be done before bedtime. To avoid getting your bed sheets oiled up, wear an old t-shirt and/or old sweatpants to bed.

This DIY tutorial can be done daily until your skin recovers.

Remember to always apply SPF before sun exposure whether it be a run in the park, the beach or errands.

Relieve the Fire – Sunburn Remedies

relieve the burn blogWe are all guilty of it – the infatuation with golden, bronzed skin. Even makeup looks requires bronzer. Body bronzers have become increasingly popular, sunless tanning is on the rise and tanning salons still are making a profit.

Then we have the people like me, who despite all the knowledge of the damage sun causes, still love to go to the beach or pool – frequently. Though I am usually good about wearing sunscreen, one application is not enough to save you from the dreaded sunburn or worse – sun damage.

Let’s begin with developing an understanding of how a tan and consequently sunburn occurs.

The sun emits ultraviolet light rays also known us UV rays. Skin’s exposure to UV rays activates the production of melanin in your skin to protect your skin’s DNA from being harmed by the sun. When melanin is activated, it turns brown giving the appearance of a tan.

Bad Effects From The Burn

The bottom line? No matter how great the sun kissed look is, the sun damages your skin. We have all seen fellow beach goers who have somehow converted their skin to leather. Persistent use of tanning beds and lack of protective sunscreens when at the beach and pool can be extremely damaging and if your skin texture has morphed, it’s a sign to stop.

Effects from sunburns include premature wrinkles. Sun exposure accelerates the skin aging process significantly.

It also increases breakout activity. The dryness caused leads your skin to overproduce oil leading to clogged pores.
Most importantly, it also increases the risk of skin cancer and melanoma.

It Just Happened

A sunburn is never achieved on purpose (we hope), it happens (although you should make it a priority to never get burned). Through my own experiences and tips given by others, here is a compilation of remedies to soothe sunburns.

First and foremost, get out of the sun. Find a cool location that is sheltered and provides shade. When you get home, try these. Please note, if you develop sun blisters, medical attention is a must!

Dandruff Shampoo. Who knew? I like using Head & Shoulders Eucalyptus myself when I need it ASAP. Since it helps with the itchiness from a dry scalp, it helps with the itchiness of skin that has been dried exponentially from the sun. The eucalyptus in the shampoo also soothes the burn. Jump into the shower, use cool water and lather it on your burned areas.

Rx. Aspiring, Advil, Motrin – either will work great to reduce the inflammation and redness caused by the culprit rays.

Cool shower. A warm shower or hot shower on sensitive, burned skin will only increase the inflammation and discomfort. The goal is to cool down the skin temperature.

Be rich. In moisturizing we mean. Use lotions that do not contain anti-aging ingredients like retinols or hydroxy acids. These will only make your skin more sensitive to the sun during the healing process. Sunburn usually leads to peeling which means your skin has dried.

Rehydrate. Drink water often and lots of it to help the healing process along.

Got milk? Perfect. Then try a cold compress. Water, milk and ice cubes mixed in a bowl equal a recipe to soothe your skin and reduce inflammation. Milk’s protein and pH levels are more than just nutritious! Use a towel to apply it on the affected area for five minutes. Repeat this process three times.

Slather it on. SPF is now more important after encountering the pain sunburns bring. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen to combat UVA and UVB rays.

We wish you and your skin a safe summer.

Melt-Proof Makeup – Fight the Heat!

Wedding Beauty Tip: Summer wedding? Make sure your makeup artist sets you up for long lasting makeup to beat the humidity and heat.

The summer 2014 weather predictions solidified one thing, high heat and in some areas, humidity (try landing in Miami this summer without breaking into a sweat) means cream shadows, silicone foundation and waterproof everything!

We are talking about ensuring that your makeup this summer can take the heat (no pun intended for our Miami Heat fans out there!).

Let’s lay down the basic necessities:

  • Primer
  • Silicone Foundation
  • Cream Eyeshadow
  • Cream Blush/Tint
  • Long Lasting Lip Stick/Lip Stains/Gloss
  • Waterproof Concealer, Eyeliner, Mascara
  • Translucent Powder
  • Blotting Papers

Always use primer. Always. Makeup primers work double duty. The main purpose is to allow your makeup to go on smoothly and last longer. The second function is that it creates a barrier locking in the treatments and moisturizers you apply to your skin prior to applying makeup.

Beauty Tip: Use a silicone based primer as an extra line of defense against the heat.

Glo Minerals Face Primer

Foundation with silicone will be your makeup gift from the makeup heavens. Silicone based makeup products are long-lasting and will work better to combat the moisture in the air.

Beauty Tip: The less foundation applied, the less there is to sweat off or wipe away easily. Try applying the foundation with a damp sponge so that it will go on lightly. Let it set before you continue. OR use a BB Cream and then follow with a powder containing silica.

The creamier, the better. Take this summer opportunity to work with it. We love dewy complexions and natural looking glows. Cream blushes and foundations will help get you there! Cream blushes and eyeshadows are longer lasting. For your cheeks, a cheek tint is also a go-to.

Beauty Tip: When applying with your fingers, rub it on the blush/eyeshadow then blot it on the back of your hand and gently tap it on. For more defined looks, use a brush to apply the cream eyeshadow.

Keep the pout going strong. There are many options available for long lasting lip color! Lipsticks, lip glosses and lip stains in the beauty market now have timelines of 4 hours, 8 hours, 16 hours and 24 hours of lip color power.

Beauty Tip: Exfoliate your lips to make sure lipstick doesn’t flake. Want an added boost? Use lip liner before any lipstick or gloss.

Waterproof everything. Eyeliner, mascara and concealer that won’t run to reveal blemishes or give you raccoon eyes are a must. Don’t underestimate the moisture in the air. The 2 minute walk may just defeat your makeup so make sure you’re prepared.

Resist the shine. The T-zone area is notorious for the afternoon glisten and in the summertime it is at its strongest. Finish your makeup regimen with translucent powder. Use a large brush to apply it. For your touchups throughout the day, keep blotting papers handy. Don’t rub them in so that your makeup will stay put.

We love summer and the variety of colors that we can play with to create new style and beauty trends. Let us know if these tips work for you!
