Blake Lively's Chic Sidebraid Is A Hot Look For This Holiday Season
We don’t know about you but we LOVE Blake Lively’s effortlessly chic messy sidebraid hairstyle. We are so enamored with the look, in fact, that we sought out our resident Beauty Place stylist and asked her “How do we get the look?!” Here, her advice on how to achieve the of-the-moment hairstyle yourself.
1. You want to build up texture by prepping hair with a texturizing spray, such as CHI Infra Dual Texture Hairspray.
2. Then you want to create extra body and bounce by drying your hair with a diffuser. We like the CHI Rocket Professional Hairdryer.
3. Use your fingers to rake your hair to one side and create two ponytails by fastening both the top and the bottom with elastic bands.
4. Pull out the top section and create a fishtail braid.
5. Next, add a festive clip to the base of the ponytail. (Lively wore a vintage Chanel brooch here.)
And voila! You are rocking one of the best hairstyles of the season.

Summer is filled with barbeques, beach fun, pool parties and heat – lots and lots of heat. There are plenty of cute outfits and summer dresses that you can wear on these hot, humid days…but you want to have a summer hairstyle that wont stick to your face and neck or get big and frizzy when you sweat. Whatever hairstyle you go for, its always helpful to:
- Wear a leave-in spray with SPF in your hair before going out into the sun.
- Use an after-sun hair masque to help repair any damage.
Following are a few suggestions and how-to’s for summer hairstyles that will stay put and looking good through high temperatures and humidity.

Sleek High Ponytail
- Apply a blow-drying spray like Bio Ionic Thermal-Active Bodifying Blow-Dry Spray ($15.99) to damp hair and blow dry with a round brush.
- Separate hair into four sections and wrap each section in a large hot roller. Allow to cool down. Then, take out rollers and brush through the hair.
- Pick your hair up into a high ponytail and secure it with an elastic band. Hide the band by wrapping a piece of hair from the ponytail around it.
- Smooth a little bit of styling gel like It’s a 10 Miracle Firm Hold Gel ($11.39) over your hair to tame flyaways.

Big, Perfect Hair Bun
- Put a volumizing mousse in damp hair like TIGI Catwalk Fashionista Big & Bigger Volumizing Foam, $11.99.
- Blow dry hair with your head flipped over for extra volume.
- Pull your hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band.
- Divide ponytail into three sections and tease each one a bit.
- For very thin hair, add hair extensions before picking up into a ponytail.
- One by one, wrap each section around the base of ponytail.
- Secure with bobby pins.

Braided Updo
- Apply texturizing mousse like TIGI Catwalk Curlesque Strong Mousse ($12.95) to damp hair and allow hair to air dry.
- Finger comb through your hair to space out.
- Make a side part, and add BioSilk Silk Gel ($6.99) to a wide-toothed comb and run it through the larger side.
- Starting about an inch into the hair partition, separate a section of hair on the crown of your head so that there is no obvious partition going all the way down the side of your head.
- At the front of the larger section of hair, split it into three sections and begin French braiding towards the nape of your neck.
- Once you reach the back of your head, secure that side and braid down the other side of your head.
- Once you finish braiding, pull down the section on the crown of your head and comb it back into one ponytail along with the two braids on each side of the partition.
Twist the ponytail into a bun.
Spritz on a strong-hold hairspray like TIGI Rockaholic Rocktastic Hardcore Spray Gel, $7.99.

This year, the secret to a great summer hairstyle is casual, but polished. As far as texture goes, both straight and wavy hairstyles meet summer standards. Waves are always very summery. Make this year’s trendy hairstyle waves smooth for a more times-relevant look. Flat iron your hair first to smooth it out but leave some volume at the roots. CHI flat irons are top quality hairstyling tools that can be found at affordable prices.

Classic hair buns are being worn whether you’re dressing up or dressing down. Wear the modern hairstyle at a medium height right behind your head or super high. Add an extra trendy touch by incorporating a black headband into the mix.

Asymmetrical updos, such as the messy side braid, are extremely popular this summer. These kinds of modern hairstyles combine casual with elegant, so well.
As a parting thought, don’t make your updo too perfect; leave out a few loose strands. Also, vintage-looking accessories are a great finishing touch to soften your look.

I love summer. All year long, I wait for summer to arrive so I can enjoy the refreshing beach and get a nice, healthy glow. I only ever wish that I can find a way to look good while I’m at the beach. No, I’m not talking about how fit my body may or may not be (though I’d like to know the easy shortcut to that, too). Sometimes, I see people that look great after a day at the beach. Their beach hair looks sexy and their un-made-up face looks fresh and healthy. I can’t speak for everyone – some of those people may be blessed with hair and skin that look good in any condition. I, on the other hand, need some assistance from some man-made products.
For your face, apply Murad Correcting Moisturizer. The tinted moisturizer soothes skin and evens out blotchy skin tone while it protects you from sun damage with SPF 15. It will look like your bare skin, only with a more balanced skin tone.
For your hair, apply Macadamia Natural Oil Nourish Leave-In Cream to wet hair after you are done with your swimming. The leave-in cream tames and softens your hair while it protects it from UV rays. If you STILL don’t feel like your hair can be trusted to look good, set it in a messy side braid AFTER you’ve applied the Macadamia Natural Oil Nourish Leave-In Cream and call it a day.
Then, go on to enjoy that I-look-good-without-trying look.

It’s good to have different hairstyle options– whether it be for those frustrating bad hair days, for those days when you just don’t have enough time to do your full post-wash process, or simply because you want to try something different. Previously, I have made reference to the how-to’s for the side-braid hairstyle as well as a blog on how to get Snooki’s poof. Following are a few other easy hairstyle options that I think look great.

Put a bump in your ‘do.
Separate the crown section of your hair and tease it.
After teasing, spritz it with some hairspray (like the Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Harder Hairspray).
Then, pull both side sections back around the teased section and pin it into place.

Loose curls
Blow-dry your hair and make sure to untangle any knots.
Using a 1-inch curling iron (like the FHI HEAT Curling Iron), curl 2-inch sections of hair, one at a time, holding the barrel vertically 3 inches from the root.
Spritz some hairspray (TIGI Rockaholic Run Times Flexible Hairspray) on your hair after finishing with the curling iron.
After allowing it to set for a few minutes, run your fingers through for a more natural look.
Use a smoothing cream (like the TIGI Bed Head After-Party Smoothing Cream) to soften the ends.

Slightly tighter curls
After washing your hair, apply some leave-in conditioner (like the TIGI Curls Rock Leave-In Moisturizer) to damp hair.
Make braids all over your head, then go to sleep.
Undo the braids in the morning and separate them a bit with your fingers.

Lately, everywhere you look, you are seeing more and more of the trendy side-braid. The artsy, half-fast-looking hairstyle trend has found its way into celebrity news magazines. Celebrities such as Thandie Newton and Rachel McAdams are among the list of stars that are fans of the side-braid hairstyle trend. The hairstyle trend can be described as semi-undone with a messy finish. Its very easy to do for yourself.
- Apply a volumizing mousse such as the Big Sexy Root Pump Plus Volumizing Spray Mousse to damp hair and then blow dry
- Roll up 2-inch sections of hair in medium-sized Velcro rollers and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes
- Begin French braiding your hair starting behind the left ear
- Use a hair-tie for the bottom of the braid or let it naturally unravel a bit
