Double Duty: Multiple Uses for Your Beauty Products

These days, we spend the majority of our time finding ways to save time. The fact is that time-saving solutions are a hot commodity. What better way to make the most of your early mornings – and maybe catch a few extra zzz’s – by using beauty products that pull double duty? Here are several products that work overtime, offering multiple uses and shaving minutes off your daily, often hectic routine.

In a pinch, lipstick can double as blush – and a cream blush can also fill in for your lipstick, as needed. Then there are the genius products actually formulated to do both, like the Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain in Forever Pink ($17.79). Producing a soft, girlish flush, the flattering hue adds a kiss of color to your pout and brightens up even the most tired complexions in an instant. The creamy, water-resistant, long-lasting formula is a dream.jane-iredale-lip-cheek-stain

You reach for your shaving cream mid-shower, only to discover there’s barely a drop left. We’ve all been there – and we’ve all felt that desperately uncomfortable itch that occurs when we substitute soap for shaving cream. A better solution? Grab your hair conditioner. It’s rich, thick, and moisturizing, and it provides just the right slip to glide your razor over. Give TIGI Bed Head Elasticate Conditioner ($9.99) a try for its hydrating prowess. It’s as good to your skin as it is to your hair!

Just as valuable as time are options. We love a product that doesn’t stop at just one – it goes above and beyond, offering a plethora of possibilities. The CHI Nano Digital Flat Iron ($99.98) is a genius example. Not only does it straighten locks to perfection, but it also serves as a curling iron. With a quick flick of your wrist, you can use the iron to create lush, voluminous curls or even tight ringlets.

Sometimes you just don’t have the time or motivation to address every single inch of your face. Simplify your routine with a product like Glo Minerals Shimmer Brick in Gleam ($20.99). A multipurpose product that serves as a blush and highlighter, it instantly brightens up a sallow complexion, adds color to cheeks and even contours your face to add dimension.glo-minerals-shimmer-brick

Who hasn’t overslept and taken a frantic shower – or worse, skipped that morning shower altogether – just to get to the office in time? If you can squeeze in a quick rinse, make use of Anthony Logistics’ Invigorating Rush Hair and Body Wash ($24.99). It’s designed to clean and condition your hair and your skin, so you’re left completely soft from head to toe – without the need to use a whole bunch of products to achieve the same effect.097735d6e58f15edb101e22edd367bd2

The Dos and Don’ts of Hair Removal

Ah, womanhood. It’s great and all, but if there’s just one tiny niggling complaint we have, it’s that hair removal can be such a beast. And because summer is fast approaching, that means it’s time to pay a little more attention to our body hair and develop a game plan. Get ready to bare some skin with these helpful dos and don’ts that will make removing that hair a breeze.

waxing-women

Do baby your skin. Nothing says “Hey, I just waxed my upper lip!” like a patch of bright red skin below your nose. The fact is that waxing is irritating, and thus your skin requires a little TLC post-treatment. Get yourself involved with Anthony Logistics’ Cool Fix Rollerball Lip and Brow Formula ($14.29). This innovative product contains soothing Mediacalm complex, exfoliating salicylic acid, anti-inflammatory caffeine, and free radical-busting grape seed extract. They work together to instantly relax freshly waxed skin, preventing both discomfort and telltale redness.

Don’t wax right before a special event. Your skin needs to breathe, so the last thing you want to do is apply makeup over it.

Do be prepared for an ingrown hair or two. It’s not a given that it will occur, of course, but who wants to be stuck with a larger-than-life bump that seems to be getting bigger by the minute? Ingrown hairs can occur if you wax too soon after your last treatment, if you shave against the grain, or if you neglect to exfoliate. Invest in a jar of Bliss Ingrown Hair Eliminating Pads ($28.99) and, guaranteed, those pesky painful ingrowns will be a thing of the past. This potent, saturated pad gently exfoliates skin with a combination of alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids, leaving skin soft and smooth.

Don’t expose your skin to anything that has the potential to irritate it right after waxing, such as sunlight, self-tanning booths, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

thumb-products-that-will-let-you-give-up-shaving-foreverDo remember to moisturize, especially after you shave your legs. Ever notice that they feel a little tight and itchy after you step out of the shower? This is usually due to hot water irritating your skin or a razor blade that isn’t fresh. A product like DermOrganic Hand & Body Moisture Lotion ($18.69) is ideal for soothing skin. It’s rich in Moroccan argan extract and helps protect the skin’s natural barrier.

Don’t apply a heavily scented moisturizer or fragrance to freshly waxed skin. Any type of alcohol can trigger a jolt of discomfort that will linger far longer than you’d like. Just say no, ladies.

Beat The Heat

It has been scientifically proven that sunscreen is the most important skincare product that both men and women should own and wear religiously. Not only does sunscreen protect against signs of aging, but also with proper use one could drastically reduce the chances of getting skin cancer.

With thousands of options, different SPF factors and chemical vs. physical sunscreens on the market, one could easily get discouraged. The editors of thebeautyplace.com have searched, tested, and compiled a list of their top sunscreen picks so you can shop with ease.

Tap Water and Skin Don’t Go Well Together

Basic-Skin-CareWith everything saying that H2O is the healthiest natural element to put into our bodies, imagine our surprise when we heard it that tap water can actually be bad on your body.

We are talking skin care. Studies have shown that the high mineral content in tap water can actually be too harsh for sensitive skin types and over-sensitized skin.

Actually, all skin types, regardless of sensitivity, would benefit from removing tap water from their daily skin care routine.

Though we don’t have an alternative solution for body and hair – using water bottles are out of the question, we care about the environment – you can make changes in your facial skin care routine to avoid using tap water.

The Details

Tap water is also known as hard water in certain areas. Water with high mineral content like higher amounts of magnesium, calcium, and iron tend to irritate skin by being too abrasive and drying.

Have you ever noticed the residue left around faucets before you scrub it clean? Now imagine those same deposits on your face.

The Solution

It’s been said before, but we will say it again – micellar water.

With the French leading the “say no to tap water” movement, the trend has reached the United States. Using micellar water does not require rinsing. Just apply to a cotton ball or or cotton pad and wipe. It is gentle for all types of skin and helps remove stubborn makeup as well.

Those that prefer milk cleansers can just wipe it off with toner and follow with a spritz of thermal water. (Make sure to pat the water into your skin or pat a tissue to absorb the excess water to prevent dehydration.)

If removing tap water from your skin care routine, you will need to definitely add exfoliating as a step to help remove any impurities that may stay clogged in your pores. Do a chemical peel or a facial as needed to help remove dead skin buildup – and anything else that’s trapped.

Another suggestion – filter your water at home. This may help to remove the harsher minerals from disrupting your skin’s pH balance.

Find a Balance

Cleansing with water is still one of the best ways to thoroughly cleanse skin gently and to remove oil. If you do continue with tap water, add in a thermal water spray into your routine or even spritz on micellar water to help hydrate skin.

Will you continue to use tap water or will you remove it completely? #WeWantToKnow

HALLOWEEN MAKEUP WITHOUT THE BLEMISHES

ee3f7ad3834eb7fbd3e636bb987c441eIt’s that time of year again and while we absolutely LOVE these Halloween makeup looks, we also would love to avoid blemishes appearing after the hallow festivities are over.

Save your skin from blemishes the morning after a great night of tricks and treats with these tips.

If you already have blemishes, make sure to treat them with an acne spot treatment before applying any other products. This should help reduce the chances of Halloween makeup aggravating your skin. If we had to pick, Murad’s Acne Spot Fast Fix does wonders!

Keeping in mind that clogged pores is one of the main causes of breakouts, use non-comedogenic makeup and avoid any oil based makeup or paint. We also suggest avoiding any facial treatments  this week like skin peels, heavy exfoliants, or steam treatments. These tend to leave your pores open. Leave it for after Halloween.

We already swear by the rule of primer before concealer and foundation but in this case, let’s make it a priority. Primers help to seal pores before makeup application reducing the likelihood of pores becoming clogged or congested. Two of our current favorites are Jane Iredale Absence Oil Control Primer and Dr. Brandt Pores No More Refiner.

And let’s emphasize this point – avoid any products not safe for skin. Glue being one of them. If you need to make sure something stays on, bring out the clear lip gloss.

The best way to ensure your killer Halloween makeup doesn’t lead to a catastrophic breakout? Remove all of it once your night ends. Many of our friends in the beauty business suggest removing first with a cold cream cleanser, then following up with a makeup remover, and cleansing your face. The morning after, exfoliate and use a mask to help remove any leftover residue. We would even suggest an additional step – using micellar water after using a makeup remover. Ideal for sensitive skin it won’t dry skin even if following with a facial cleanser.
Are you following this regime this Halloween? #WeWantToKnow!

Are You Sabotaging Your Beauty Products?

We all are concerned. Once we open that serum, whenever we look for the 12M or 18M symbol – how long do I have before this product expires?

There are many factors in our everyday lives that affect the efficacy of your cosmetics and skin care products. For our beautiful readers, we have narrowed it down to these three tips:

Sun, Sun Go Away

Okay so that rhyme is not as smoothly-flowing as “rain, rain go away” but you get the point. UV rays have many negative effects on your beauty products and for those shopping high-end brands like SkinMedica and SkinCeuticals this is a tip to consider.

Keep ALL products away from direct sunlight. No questions asked.

There is always transference of bacteria whenever you touch products with your fingertips or skin. Sunlight will actually feed this bacteria.

UV rays will also reduce the effectiveness of active ingredients in your products. Worst case scenario, active ingredients become null. Generally if the product directions specify night time application, they should not be exposed to sunlight.

Products with antioxidants and retin-a are even more sensitive to sunlight.

Even your favorite fragrances can turn sour, or change in color. (Tip: if color has changed, UV rays has altered its chemical makeup and it’s probably time to say goodbye.)

So what’s the solution? Like the song by Dev, keep it in the dark. Store products in your drawers or cabinets will ensure that they stay at room temperature and are not exposed to light rays.

Amp Up the Shelf Life

Maintaining products in cool temperature not only makes products more refreshing (a MUST with Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Masque!) but also helps them last longer. Consider this your very own extension. Product expires in March 2016? This will keep it working great for a couple more weeks after that!

Below are products you should definitely store:

  • Anything with retinol
  • Anything with antioxidants (i.e. Vitamin C, Ferulic Acid, etc.)
  • Eye creams
  • After-sun care products
  • Anti-itch creams
  • All natural beauty products
  • Nail Polish (Tip: Make sure to shake extra hard before use as it may have separated)

Keep an out for storing directions when using topical prescriptions. Some may require storing it at cool temperatures.

Although this helps everyone get the most bang for their buck, don’t be surprised if the consistency and look has changed. Oil and water will probably separate and oily products will harden a bit. The effectiveness of the product will be the same regardless so don’t fret!

Cool is better, but don’t let your products freeze. Just like sunlight and heat, the action of freezing and thawing may actually make your products unstable.

It’s Not For Bathroom Use

We love steamy showers but the condensation of water on certain products can generate mold – specifically makeup and beauty tools like brushes and sponges. When cleaning brushes, set it to dry somewhere else where there isn’t constant moisture.

Just keeping in mind these three things will ensure that your products remain effective longer.

MEET THE BRAND: MIO SKINCARE

mamamio_blogNew to TheBeautyPlace.com is another innovative skin care line – Mama Mio and Mio skincare.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it varies in thickness. A large population of women experience itching, pigment changes, and most develop striae gravidarum otherwise known as stretch marks on their skin during those beautiful 40 weeks of pregnancy.

Sian, Tanya, Kathy and Jill are the founders of the Mama Mio and Mio skincare lines. With 9 kids between the four of them, they know just how much your body changes, how hard it is to recover, and how underwhelming it was to find skin care for expecting mothers. With that in mind these four women were determined to change that and so they developed a skin care range just for expecting mothers.

Mama Mio is a safe and effective skin care brand for expecting mothers. The brand is very passionate about their ingredients. The products they develop do not contain parabens, mineral oils, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors, SLS, and the list goes on. Instead their products are packed with safe ingredients such as Omegas 3, 6, and 9 that help with the elasticity of skin to prevent stretch marks and other discomforts.

Products range from The Tummy Rub Butter to the Pregnancy Boob Tube, a bust protection cream. It has been 8 years since the brand launched. It can now be found in 14 countries and is highly praised by everyday mothers, celebrities and royals.

With the increasing success of Mama Mio the brand wanted to develop a skin care range that would help the skin look and feel as good as their body felt. Mio Fit Skin for Life was born with just that mission in mind.

Looking to tighten, lift, firm skin or smooth out that pesky cellulite? They have products for that too. Their products range from the Workout Wonder, an energizing, stimulating gel for muscles,  to The A Cream,  a body firming cream.

With two unique skin care ranges, the Mio skincare brand is revolutionizing skin care in their own way. With a list of safe ingredients, Mama Mio wants women to feel confident and love their skin.

AT-HOME FACE PEELS & WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

athomefacepeelsRadiant skin is in!

For this trend, we have the inside scoop on what you need to know regarding facial peels. Many think of raw, red skin when thinking facial peels but there are many products available in skin care world that are gentle enough to use without extreme burning or discomfort.

Let’s start with the benefits.

Face peels help remove top layers of dead skin by exfoliating. As a result, it helps speed up the cell turnover rate creating a new layer of skin that is fresh, smooth, and luminous. With regular use, or sometimes even after one use with the best ones, it helps improve skin texture, tone while minimizing fine lines. Large pores appear tighter and it can even assist with acne because it helps unclog pores. On top of that, it helps optimize skin to absorb other products to see better results. By exfoliating skin, your complexion appears to be brighter and healthier.

What you need to know:

1. pH Levels

We all recognize strength level of a peel by the percentage of a particular type of acid like 15% glycolic acid  peel versus a 10% glycolic acid peel. According to various dermatologists, we should also consider pH levels. Our skin’s pH level is usually between 4.5 and 5.5. The lower the pH level then the more acidic and aggressive the peel will be. If it is higher, it will be more alkaline and provide a breeding ground for bacteria.  Finding the right pH level for your skin in a peel will determine how acidic a peel can be to provide the desired results.

2. When to start using face peels

Like antioxidant serums, you don’t need to wait until you’re in your 40s. Your 20s are a good time to start. Those dealing with acne can even be as young as teenagers to begin treatments to treat acne and reduce acne scarring.

3. To peel or not to peel

Remember how we mentioned raw, red, peeling skin? Yeah, that’s not always the case with face peels. You can reap the benefits of a face peel even if your skin does not peel. Visible peeling is a side effect of these types of face treatments but the effect of the peel is occurring at the cellular level. Depending on the peel’s strength, you may see none to some peeling but will see results regardless.

4. What to do after

After using a face peel, there’s a couple of things you should consider. For our gym fanatics, avoid it for 24 hours. After a face peel, you need to try and remain cool. This will help avoid the risk of hyperpigmentation. You also need to amp up your sun protection and avoid exposure to the sun. Those using retinols and products with vitamin A should wait a couple of days after treatment to allow the skin to recover. (Tip: for harsh peel treatments, it is also suggested to postpone retinols, retinoids and retin-A products a few days before the peel to reduce skin’s sensitivity to it.) With daily peels, which are gentler, you can use products  with peptides and vitamin C followed by a good moisturizer.
