The Do’s & Don’ts Of Self Tanning

Get ready to glow! With the winter season here, we’re not as exposed to the sun as we wish and our tan lines are most likely to be invisible. But don’t worry, there’s still hope that we can have our summer sun kissed skin even when the temperatures are going down. Do we even have to mention that tanning beds and lying out, with out sunscreen are not viable options? By now, you should know to practice safe sun and the only safe way to get a tan is to fake it. Faking it is far easier than you think, and rather inexpensive. However, there are some things to keep in my mind that you should and you shouldn’t do when doing self-tanning:

self-tanner_1

Do’s:

  1. Exfoliate your skin before: in order to get better results with self-tanning, your skin needs to be on great conditions. One way to prepare your skin is to exfoliate it at least 8 hours before. The Avene Akerat  ($25.99) is a smoothing, exfoliating cream for body. Ideal for dry to very dry skin types, it minimizes rough and hardened skin and improves the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
  1. Use an applicator: knowing how to get the perfect tan can take some time. If you’re pulling and rubbing at the skin when applying your self-tan you are likely causing streaks. That’s why we recommend a tan applicator, a mitt or a self-tanning product for beginners such as Tantowel Endless Tan Classic Kit ($16.99) This is a combination of the TanTowel Classic self-tanning towelettes and the clear liquid Tanning Mist. You won’t believe how easy is to apply it and get the tan everyone is dying to have!
  1. Moisturize to maintain your sexy tan longer! It is recommended to apply a good body lotion at least once a day. Not only to maintain a beautiful tan, but also to hydrate your skin. John Masters Organics Bare Unscented Body Lotion ($14.99) is ideal for all skin types and perfect to use every day.

Don’ts:

1.Don’t use anything with oil before self-tanning — no moisturizing products. It will get in the way of your tan. Self-tan needs to get right down to your skin without something blocking it.

2.Don’t layer It on! Your skin can only absorb a certain amount of product. Depending on how you apply. What we recommend is two decent coats or a few light layers is always sufficient. One of our favorite ones are Bliss FatGirlSlim Hide and Glow Sleek – Fair to Medium ($33.99) this tinted body firming spray contains Amazonian maracuja oil and caffeine to firm and reduce puffiness. It gives you that luminous glow and you won’t have to apply hundred on layers to get the tan you want.

3. Don’t shave immediately before applying. Shaving exfoliates the skin, leaving it supple and ready for bronzing, so it should be done before self-tanner is applied, just not right before since shaving can     open pores and create cuts. Prevent irritations and take your precautions.

Don’t forget to take into consideration these previous advices and achieve your desired golden glow without the dangerous effects of the sun!

The Ultimate Evening Beauty Routine

Nighttime is the right time to add a few key beauty products to your routine. While we love the shimmery shadows, colorful lip glosses, and brilliant blushes that bring our daytime regimens to life, it’s what happens at night that makes the biggest difference in our skin’s condition.04ce89131d05804b71d38687e4209625

That’s because the skin repairs itself overnight, and increased regeneration and renewal mean you’ll wake up to a brighter, healthier looking complexion. You can ramp up this process and give your skin an even greater boost by adding a few key overnight products to your routine. Here are a few we love.

Dermalogica Age Smart Overnight Repair Serum ($41.99) is the stuff you’d dream about if you weren’t slathering it onto your skin before catching a few winks. It’s packed with nourishing argan and rose oils that revive tired skin, stimulate cell turnover, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.

SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight ($41.99) could be the BFF your dry skin has been searching for this entire time. Smooth it onto skin after cleansing for best results: you’ll reap the benefits of its 10% hydroxy acid, which lightly exfoliates away dead skin while leaving behind a softer, smoother finish.

Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Overnight Treatment ($16.99) is a must if your main concern is persistent acne. It’s lightweight enough to use regularly, and it’s packed with extracts of cucumber, green tea, and lavender, which work together to soothe irritation and minimize redness. Over time, you’ll see fewer blemishes and ruddy areas will appear calmer and feel smoother.

Dr. Brandt Glow Overnight Resurfacing Serum ($51.89) is one of the most powerful anti-aging treatments available. It contains time-released retinol, a potent ingredient that is known for its anti-aging properties. It also helps reverse the development of dark spots, sloughs away dead skin cells, and smoothes out rough areas in need of a little extra TLC.

AVOID TOXIC SUNSCREENS

sunscreenAs the summer sun continues to heat things up, UVA and UVB protection should be a priority. As the leading cause in skin cancer, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, UVA/UVB rays are extremely harmful.

According to Skin Cancer Foundation, the sun protection factor, or SPF, indicates the length of time it takes for UV rays to redden skin. For example, a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will take 30 minutes longer to redden the skin. Sunscreens with SPF 15 protection screen 93% of the sun’s UVB rays; SPF 30 screens 97%; SPF 50 screens 98%.

The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit dedicated to protecting human health and the environment, identified some of the most harmful ingredients found in sunscreens in department store brands and drug store brands.

By sorting through the level of toxicity of FDA-approved ingredients commonly found in sunscreens, the EWG’s sunscreen guide noted Oxybenzone as one of the most toxic ingredients. With a skin penetration level of 1% to 9%, Oxybenzone interferes with the body’s hormone system.

The most important part of the guide? EWG’s approved brands that scored well in regards to chemical penetration from ingredients, skin allergies and other toxicity concerns.

Jan Marini, La Roche-Posay, Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare (formerly MD Skincare), NIA24 and Skinceuticals are all available on TheBeautyPlace.com at competitive prices.

SUMMER SKIN CARE

summerskin3

Can you feel the heat? In sunny south Florida, summer is going strong. Your summer skin care routine should be low maintenance.

Check out these summer skin care faves:

1. Bliss Fabulous Makeup Mel Gel-to-Oil Cleanser is a one-step cleanser. Use a small amount so it dissolves to oil once you begin massaging it in. Beauty Tip: Twice or three times a week, use this cleanser and then your regular face wash to hydrate and soften skin.

2. Murad Pore Reform Balancing Moisturizer SPF 15 is lightweight and helps control oil production. Apply onto clean, dry skin.

3. For days where extra SPF protection is needed, apply La Roche Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Tinted Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid after moisturizing. With its light tint, you may even be able to skip foundation altogether!

4. Use foundations that double as SPF protection. Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Foundations have SPF 20 for protection while leaving a flawless, natural finish. P.S. It also helps fight signs of aging!

5. New to TheBeautyPlace.com is Glo Minerals Protecting Powder with SPF 30. Instead of redoing your makeup for sunscreen protection, this translucent powder helps reapply SPF protection with a sheer color leaving a youthful glow.

6. Since we can’t walk around with a portable misting fan, thermal spring water mists will have to do. We are loving Avene’s Thermal Spring Water mist.

HOT, HOT, HOT: SKINCARE IN HUMID CLIMATES

Here in sunny south Florida, we have been experiencing high heat and high humidity this past week. This means trouble for clear complexions – high humidity brings the onslaught of more oil and the potential of frequent breakouts and blemishes.

Unlike winter skincare where the focus is on heavy moisturizing so skin doesn’t dry out, humidity requires different skincare tactics. With summer around the corner, it’s better to be prepared!

To achieve red carpet worthy, glowing skin like the celebrities had at the Latin Billboard Music Awards this past Thursday, use these tips:

Acid Is Good

Humidity causes sweat to sit on skin longer leading to clogged pores and breakouts if not cleansed well. Using a skin cleanser with alpha or beta hydroxy acids will ensure that your skin is exfoliated and that built up oil in the pores are dissolved. Pick a cleanser with light amounts of alpha or beta hydroxy acids as too much may dry out skin leading to more breakouts.

Lightweight Is The Right Way

Humidity itself feels heavy on skin but don’t forego the moisturizer to avoid oiliness! Instead, opt for a lightweight moisturizer  that is not formulated with any heavy oils (i.e. macadamia nut oil or argan oil).  For sunscreen protection, water-based sunscreens will absorb faster leaving less residue on your skin. We like La Roche Posay Anthelios 30 Cooling Water-Lotion Sunscreen.

Hands Off!

This one is very important, year round, in all types of weather – hands off. Try to avoid touching your face, leaning on your hands, holding your chin, etc. Your face is already dealing with perspiration from the heat and humidity and touching your face can lead to the transfer of bacteria and grime from your hands.

NYFW FALL 2015 BACKSTAGE BEAUTY

landscape_nrm_1424108220-von-furstenberg-bks-z-rf15-0520

There are a lot of reasons we love backstage at New York Fashion Week: the models, the celebrities, the nails and of course the gorgeous beauty looks. But perhaps the most appealing aspect is that we get access to the top-tier makeup, hair, and nail pros in the world. These experts fly in for one week only to make sure every model is done up to perfection. And we beauty reporters are by their side, recorders out, soaking in all their knowledge. But we’re not greedy! So, here we’ve rounded some of the genius tips and tricks we’ve overheard backstage at the Fall 2015 tents. Keep reading to learn everything from how to turn your favorite shimmery lipstick into a velvety matte one to a new way to texturizing your hair.

Mattify Your Favorite Lipstick

Problem: you love a certain lipstick shade but wish it were matte. Backstage at Tibi, makeup artist Cassandra Garcia pressed a Pink lip shade on the pout and then dusted the mouth with a Porcelain Pearl blush to create an original matte hue. As with any matte lip color, make sure to let the lips marinate in lip balm first to rectify any dryness. This trick will also transition your favorite bright Summer lip hue to a more velvety, Fall-appropriate finish.

Play With Your Tools
Precise, geometric nail art isn’t just for the accurate hands of a manicurist — all you need to do is upgrade your everyday striper brush with a quick modification. Jin Soon Choi suggests cutting the tip off the brush. Instead of the standard pointed tip (like a v shape), hold your scissor perpendicular to the brush handle and snip the tip straight across to create a flat, squared-off edge. Forget those feathery designs — now your work will look blockier and crisper, like the Prabal Gurung runway nails.

Apply-Cream-Blush-Your-Fingers

Apply Cream Blush With Your Fingers
Remember the ’80s, when blush took over your entire cheek from lip to brow? Thank goodness trends are fleeting! Backstage at Misha Nonoo, makeup artist Marc Reagan taught us the more modern way to apply cream rouge — with your fingers. First smile and place product on the shelf of the cheek. Then, dab the color all the way back toward the hairline. Finally, use a separate clean finger to blend it downward. “[This technique] keeps the blush high on the cheek, which is lifting, and it covers the right area of the cheek where you naturally flush,” he said.

Mascara Free Eyes
Much like the seductive sophistication found in Altuzarra’s Fall 2015 collection, the makeup also was sublet yet alluring. For this collection no mascara was applied, the eyes were smoked with great eye shadow in the inner corner of the eyes and copper on the bottom lid. Shading and blending the colors together for sheen.

9 CONCEALER TRICKS EVERY WOMEN SHOULD KNOW

16199283ba512a8227343cddf2ddcd21

1) If you use foundation, apply it first, and then apply your concealer.
If you apply your foundation first, you’ll find that you don’t need to use as much concealer. If you apply concealer first, however, you’ll remove most of it while applying your foundation.

2) The most flattering way to apply concealer is to draw a triangle with the base under your eye and the point toward your cheek.
This shape not only conceals dark circles, but it also instantly creates the illusion that your face is lifted. Think of it as holding a flashlight against your cheek, shining the light right underneath your eye, and drawing the focus upward.
3) To prevent your eye shadow from falling off your lid and settling in the creases, prime your eyelids first with a dab of concealer.

4) When concealing a pimple, first use a green concealer, then cover the area with a concealer that matches your skin tone perfectly.
Cancel out a pimple’s redness by applying green concealer with a clean brush to only the pimple (not the skin around it) to avoid spreading the bacteria. Then, use a cotton swab to dab on a high-coverage liquid concealer that matches your skin tone to camouflage the pimple. Blend it into the surrounding skin and finish with setting powder

5) If you have a pimple on your chest or back that you need to conceal, cover the trouble spots with a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly, and then top it with a translucent powder.
Continue to alternate concealer and setting powder until the blemish is undetectable. The concealer will hide the blemish and the setting powder will prevent it from wearing off.

6) If you find yourself without concealer, place a small dot of liquid foundation on the area, wait a few minutes for the formula to set, and then lightly blend it out.
The trick is to wait until the foundation dries and thickens a bit (it will eventually reach the consistency of concealer) before trying to blend it. If you blend it too soon, the foundation will be sheer and rub off, leaving you with very little coverage.

7) Use a concealer that’s slightly lighter than your skin tone to line three tiny sections of your eyes: the inner “V,” the middle section of your eyelid, and just below your brow bone.
Lightly blend for instantly well-rested eyes and a highlight that looks natural.

9) Know what issues different colors of concealer fix.
Peach shades cancel out blue circles or bruising, green hide red blemishes, and yellow-toned concealers correct almost all uneven skin tones.
