TheBeautyPlace.com Trend Alert: Embracing The Frizz

Frizzy hair at Marc Jacobs

Here in TheBeautyPlace.com offices, we refer to “frizz” as “the other ‘F’ word.”  And, as our home-base is Miami, Florida, our hair succumbs to the not-so-positive effects of humid heat all too often.

So, we were slightly amused to hear that some of the world’s leading hairstylists (such as Orlando Pita and Guido) have taken on the mission of inviting women to embrace the fuzz by making it bigger and better than ever.

“Say what?!” We hear your cry?  We KNOW!  We reply.  We couldn’t believe it either.  But, having reviewed the runways we can tell you: it’s true.

And here, our essential five products for embracing–and rocking–the frizz.

  1. Thickening Lotion:Apply to damp hair to give body and texture.  We recommend BioSilk Thickening Creme.
  2. Volumizing Mousse: Apply to damp hair to give hold.  We like Big Sexy Root Pump Plus Volumizing Spray Mousse.
  3. Dry Shampoo or Texturizing Spray: Spray on dry hair until you get a chalky, powdery feeling and then tease.  One of our faves is CHI Infra Texture Dual Action Hair Spray.
  4. Boar-and-Nylon Hairbrush: Adds volume and fluff when used for teasing.  It’s also less damaging than a comb.
  5. Hairspray: Spritz your favorite hairspray (we like TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Firm Hold Hairspray) on a brush to help tame flyaways, or spray directly onto teased hair to help maintain height.

Great Hairstyles for Summer Heat

/ Author:

Summer is filled with barbeques, beach fun, pool parties and heat – lots and lots of heat. There are plenty of cute outfits and summer dresses that you can wear on these hot, humid days…but you want to have a summer hairstyle that wont stick to your face and neck or get big and frizzy when you sweat. Whatever hairstyle you go for, its always helpful to:

  • Wear a leave-in spray with SPF in your hair before going out into the sun.
  • Use an after-sun hair masque to help repair any damage.

Following are a few suggestions and how-to’s for summer hairstyles that will stay put and looking good through high temperatures and humidity.

CC by ~Transverbero~

Sleek High Ponytail

  • Apply a blow-drying spray like Bio Ionic Thermal-Active Bodifying Blow-Dry Spray ($15.99) to damp hair and blow dry with a round brush.
  • Separate hair into four sections and wrap each section in a large hot roller. Allow to cool down. Then, take out rollers and brush through the hair.
  • Pick your hair up into a high ponytail and secure it with an elastic band. Hide the band by wrapping a piece of hair from the ponytail around it.
  • Smooth a little bit of styling gel like It’s a 10 Miracle Firm Hold Gel ($11.39) over your hair to tame flyaways.

Big, Perfect Hair Bun

  • Put a volumizing mousse in damp hair like TIGI Catwalk Fashionista Big & Bigger Volumizing Foam, $11.99.
  • Blow dry hair with your head flipped over for extra volume.
  • Pull your hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band.
  • Divide ponytail into three sections and tease each one a bit.
  • For very thin hair, add hair extensions before picking up into a ponytail.
  • One by one, wrap each section around the base of ponytail.
  • Secure with bobby pins.

Braided Updo

  • Apply texturizing mousse like TIGI Catwalk Curlesque Strong Mousse ($12.95) to damp hair and allow hair to air dry.
  • Finger comb through your hair to space out.
  • Make a side part, and add BioSilk Silk Gel ($6.99) to a wide-toothed comb and run it through the larger side.
  • Starting about an inch into the hair partition, separate a section of hair on the crown of your head so that there is no obvious partition going all the way down the side of your head.
  • At the front of the larger section of hair, split it into three sections and begin French braiding towards the nape of your neck.
  • Once you reach the back of your head, secure that side and braid down the other side of your head.
  • Once you finish braiding, pull down the section on the crown of your head and comb it back into one ponytail along with the two braids on each side of the partition.
Twist the ponytail into a bun.
Spritz on a strong-hold hairspray like TIGI Rockaholic Rocktastic Hardcore Spray Gel, $7.99.

Side-braid or Fishtail
Directions from Hairstyle Trend Alert: The Side-Braid blog post.

  • Apply a volumizing mousse such as the Big Sexy Root Pump Plus Volumizing Spray Mousse ($15.99) to damp hair and then blow dry.
  • Roll up 2-inch sections of hair in medium-sized Velcro rollers and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Begin French braiding your hair, starting behind the left ear towards your right shoulder.
  • Use a hair-tie for the bottom of the braid or let it naturally unravel a bit.
  • Use bobby pins to fasten any loose ends for a playful finish.

Protect Color-Treated Hair

/ Author:

CC by david_shankbone

Those of us who color our hair would like to keep the hair color alive and vibrant between salon visits. Good News: it’s actually not hard to do. Keep your hair color the same shade you originally paid for it to be. Daily factors such as the sun, environmental damage, product buildup, chlorine, saltwater and hard water deposits are all to thank for dulling our hair color. Red hair fades most. Use at-home color enhancers to maintain your hair color. Following are a few color-enhancing products I recommend.

For Brown and Red hair:
CHI Organics Tone & Shine Marigold Conditioner

For Brown hair:
TIGI Bed Head Brunette Goddess Products (shampoo, conditioner and shine spray)

For All Hair Colors:
CHI Ionic Color Protect Products

TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Products

TIGI S Factor Color Savvy Collection (shampoo, conditioner and Balance Boosters)

Have you tried any of these products already? What do you think?

How To Create a Faux Bob

/ Author:

Every now and then, many of us like to switch up our hairstyle for a day or night without having to make a long-term commitment.  Eventually, you may start feeling that you’ve already tried every hairstyle you can think of at least three times. What a nice, exciting change would it be if you can fake an entirely different hair cut for a day? For people with short hair, extensions will help to fake long hair. And, those of us with long hair can fake a short, bob haircut for a day with a faux bob. The faux bob is easy enough to do on yourself. Here’s how:

Prep: Apply a bit of TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost Mousse to damp hair and blow-dry with a round brush for volume. Use a curling iron to add curls all over the hair.

Anchor: Create an anchor at the nape hairline by either rolling up a small, tight, but flat bun or creating a 1” wide braid that runs from side to side. Use bobby pins to flatten the braid against the nape horizontally.

Secure: Divide hair into 3 very low ponytails. Secured the ponytails several inches away from the scalp with small elastic bands.

Pin-up: Grab the very tips of one of the ponytails and roll it up and back toward the scalp. Do this to each of the ponytails. Pin the rolled up ponytails into the anchor braid/bun to secure. Use your fingers and CHI Infra Texture Dual Action Hair Spray to get the final shape you want.

Finish: Lightly run your fingers through the surface of the faux bob and let some natural, short/layered pieces hang over. Mist CHI Infra Texture Dual Action Hair Spray over the style for a hold.

What other different hair styles do you suggest?

Trend Alert: Modern French Twists

/ Author:

Modern French Twists are everywhere you look lately. If you saw the 2011 Golden Globes, you saw dozens of modern French twists. Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Eva Longoria and Carrie Underwood were just a few stars wearing the trendy up-do. Get in the know of how to create the sophisticated, elegant look.

- Start by spraying a finishing spray, such as the Bain de Terre Infinite Hold Firm Finishing Spray $8.99, on damp hair.
- Blow dry hair a bit, just to add body.
- Separate the top half of hair from the rest and apply TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost, $11.95, for extra lift at the crown.
- Blow-dry the top section.
- Add waves and texture to the top, blow-dried section using a large barreled curling iron like the CHI Turbo Digital Ceramic Spring Curling Iron 1 1/2″, $98.95.
- Pull back the bottom section of hair tightly and gather as if to make a low ponytail without securing it.
- Twist the ponytail upward, beginning at the nape of the neck.
- Insert pins in a crisscross pattern along the twist up to the top section of the hair.
- Brush out the curls on top section and tease at the root.
- Brush top section back and tuck under the French twist. Pin securely.
- Set the French twist with a strong hairspray like TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Firm Hold Hairspray, $14.95.
- To create a softer look, gently loosen strands of hair around the ears and hairline.

Perfect Winter Season Hair

/ Author:

CC By whoSHOTyah?

There are different looks that are seasonal. For example, many people lighten their hair color during the summer (because summer sun is conducive to naturally lighter, brighter highlights and overall hair color) and darken their hair during winter. Not including hair color, many of the popular winter hair characteristics you’ll see this year include:

Volume: To balance the bulkiness that comes with layered clothing. Use TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost and TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Elevating Shampoo to add volume.

Bangs: Bangs draw attention away from pale winter skin.

Long Hair: Winter is definitely the time for longer hair because it adds some warmth and looks good.

Formal Winter Styles

When you need to dress up and look elegant, some of the Holiday Party Hairstyles are a good fit. Aside from the styles already mentioned there, French braids are among this winter’s most popular elegant updo hairstyles. Updo styles definitely take sophistication up a notch. Add a winter touch to your updo with hair accessories like those we recommended to decorate your wavy locks.
