It seems that Redken, a brand of hair care and styling products only sold in salons, is on the popularity rise. Not only have they come out with different lines of hair products that cater to all different kinds of hair such as Fresh Curls or Color Extend, but they are now getting into the gaming industry as well. Redken, owned by L’Oreal, is the first salon brand to sponsor a console game.
Redken teamed up with video game publisher Little Orbit and created Busy Scissors, a hairstyling and simulation game for teenage girls, made for Nintendo Wii and DS. An element of reality is integrated into the game where the techniques and products used are those really used in Redken salons. In the game, you can pretend you’re sectioning and blow-dry using the Redken way in your own Hollywood salon. You also shampoo, cut and color hair for your high-end, glamorous clientele. Gain points by using proper techniques.
Redken also plans to use the game as a way for their salon customers to pass the time as they wait for their appointment. Interesting, huh? What do you think of this idea?

Winter is not the only season that brings out dry skin. The summer’s ruthless rays and dry heat call dry, flaky skin out to play, as well. Without the proper care for dry skin, you may see a new coming of rashes, dryness and blemishes. Aside from the aesthetic concerns that result from dry skin, it’s also uncomfortable as it may often mean itchiness, tightness or even pain. Dry skin is very common; everyday-causes include the wrong soap, hot baths, medical conditions or clothing.
Face
Facials and face masks are important during the summer season because they cleanse and exfoliate the top layer of dry skin. Protect the skin’s acid mantel, which covers the skin and locks in moisture, by avoiding soap and water. If you can’t resist, use a mild soap and limit it to once in the morning. Too much wetting and drying of the skin dries it out. Tip: Use a cream or oil-based cleanser in the morning and evening. Apply to the skin, massage in gently, let it sit for a few seconds and then wipe it off with a damp, soft cloth. If you use a toner, make sure it is alcohol free (Peter Thomas Roth Aloe Tonic Mist). Recommendations: DDF Anti-Aging Non Drying Gentle Cleanser or Clarisonic Gentle Hydro Cleanser.
Moisturizing
Use mild moisturizers without perfumes. For dry body skin, thick and greasy moisturizers are best. A simple test: put some lotion in the palm of your hand and flip your hand over; if it runs or drips, it’s not thick enough for dry body skin. Tip: According to experts, many of us do not use moisturizers correctly. Don’t apply moisturizer on dry skin. Apply moisturizer when the skin is still damp (water helps lock in moisture). Pat your skin dry with a towel and apply the moisturizer. Let it sit for a few minutes and then towel off any excess product. Recommendations: For the face: DDF Anti Aging Daily Protective Moisturizer SPF 15. For the body: MD Skincare Hydra-Pure Firming Body Cream.
Bath Time
Prolonged exposure to water (especially hot water) can wash away the skin’s protective natural oils. If your skin feels tight when you get out of the bath or shower, it’s dried out. Tip: Choose showers over baths, limit it to a few minutes and use lukewarm water rather than hot. Keep the lukewarm water rule when you wash your hands, as well.
Soap
Soap can strip away the skin’s protective natural oils. The majority of people use too much soap; unless you’re a child or work in a job that really gets your dirty, the only parts of your body that need soap are your face, hands, feet, groin and underarms. The other parts of us can do with simple rinsing. Tip: Use a mild, creamy, moisturizing non-soap cleanser that contains glycerin or petrolatum and is fragrance-free. Recommendations: For the face: see above. For the body: Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Oasis Body Wash.
Exfoliating
Moisturizers are much more effective on skin that is properly exfoliated. Tip: According to Marcia Kilgore of Bliss Spa in New York, it is best to scrub skin when it is dry. Apply the scrub to the skin before you turn on the water. Mix with some lotion if the scrub needs moisture. Massage the scrub into the skin for a few minutes and then rinse. Recommendations: For the face: DDF Anti Aging Advanced Micro-Exfoliation Cleanser. For the body: Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Buffing Beads.
Lips
Our lips retain less moisture than the rest of our body and dry out more quickly. Licking your lips only dries them out more. Tip: Use a toothbrush to brush your lips in a circular motion to remove dead flakes. Recommendations: Use a lip balm or lip treatment such as the Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Therapy.
Sun Protection
Incase you weren’t paying attention before, the sun’s harsh rays dry out your skin. Tip: Keep your skin safe from the sun with a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher (reapply regularly). Recommendations: Murad Essential C Day Moisture SPF 30 or DDF Enhancing Sun Protection SPF 30.
Elle magazine’s April 2010 issue features Paris-based hairstylist Sebastien Richard in the 2010 Genius Awards section. Richard is best known for massive, healthy-looking, slightly disheveled hair creations. He has styled ‘dos for celebrities such as Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Pamela Anderson and several high-fashion models. An “old studio trick” that Richard shares for increasing volume without redoing hair from scratch is to flip your head over and spray your roots with dry shampoo. The celebrity stylist recommends using a small-barreled curling iron to create not-so-perfect curls, sleep on the curls overnight and then spray them the next morning. Richard didn’t close his interview before specifically mentioning BioSilk Shine On as his secret to adding gentle, high-shine to dry hair strands.
There really doesn’t need to be a whole hoopla to get some volume in your hair. It’s actually pretty simple. Choose the route you want to use: a styling product or a styling tool.
Using a styling product:
First, it would be helpful to wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner such as the Rusk Full Shampoo and Rusk Full Green Tea & Alfalfa Bodifying Conditioner After you have styled your hair, to add a bit of volume, just spray some hairspray such as the CHI Helmet Head Hair Spray on the roots in the front of your hair, right at the part. Also, mist your fingers with hairspray. Run your fingers along the hair from the front of the hairline to about an inch back into the hair part. Lift that section straight up, and then gently let it fall back down. Voila! Subtle volume
Using a styling tool:
The latest issue of Allure featured a section where they discussed how you should go about finding the right flat iron for your hair texture. For fine hair, Allure recommended the CHI Volumizer, which has curved plates that add some boost to your roots.
As you probably know, there is an ever-evolving list of flat irons – each one claiming to be better than the one before it. There are a few flat iron brands, such as CHI and FHI, which we know and associate with high quality flat irons. FHI has taken a special interest in their FHI HEAT Platform SE (Special Edition). What’s so special about the FHI HEAT Platform SE? For starters, it uses FHI’s Nano Fuzeion Technology, in which negative ions float directly over the straightener plates, making the most of the ionic effect and resulting in glossier, healthier hair. The nano titanium oxide and nano silver technology help eliminate destructive bacteria. Use the FHI HEAT Platform SE to flip, straighten, curl or twist your hair. Below is a list of the flat iron’s features to help summarize what separates its from its competitors.
FHI HEAT Platform SE Special Features:
Especially quick heating time
Scratch-resistant plates
Easy Glide plates
Allows styling on damp or dry hair
Ceramic Plates
Heat is distributed evenly along plate surfaces
Adjustable temperature (from 140 degrees to 450 degrees Fahrenheit)
Maximum far infrared heat (less damaging type of heat)
Seals in natural moisture and eliminates frizz
Protects Color: Seals in color molecules and helps color last up to 2 weeks longer
Tourmaline treated plates produce up to 20 times more negative ions than the closest flat iron competition. Negative ions allow the hair to absorb more water, thus improving the hair’s state
