Basil is one of the most beautiful natural greens we’ve ever come across. It is absolutely delicious to eat, has it’s own herbal health benefits, and adds a pretty color to any dish! As amazing as basil can be as a food, it has a wealth of skincare benefits too! If you already have a face wash and/or mask that you can’t live without, use the recipes below to “spice” your routine up once in a while!
Rinse a cup of fresh basil leaves then go ahead and crush them to release their natural oils. You can use a mortar and pestle or your hands. Once it has created a paste you can mix the basil paste with a little bit of water, to create a face wash, apply and rinse.
Or you can create a face mask by adding 1 teaspoon of plain, organic yogurt. Sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
The basil’s natural oils help to lighten dark spots and the vitamins in the yogurt promote circulation as well as prevent acne.
As if suffering from acne isn’t hard enough, we also run the risk of developing acne scars. These three simple techniques can help to prevent and reduce the appearance of those dreadful resulting imperfections.
1. Exfoliate. I probably sound like a broken record, but exfoliating is an extremely important, and often skipped step in skin care. Exfoliating removes dead skin and dirt that cleansers often miss. Skipping this step leads to more constant breakouts and ultimately, a higher risk for scars. I personally recommend a Clarisonic. If your scars are painful, you may want to stick to a sensitive brush head.
2. Facials. The only way to benefit from facials is to get the regularly! After an intense week of workouts, treat yourself to a facial instead of rewarding yourself with dinner at a nice restaurant. You’ll be giving yourself positive for your hard work instead of reverting yourself back to where you started. If you don’t want to splurge at the spa, you can use an at home spa kit to achieve the same result. Facialists do have access to more tools, but there is a lot that we can achieve in the comfort of our own home. Or, you can switch off between at home facials, and spa facials to save your wallet.
3. Masks. Skin masks can help to heal acne scars. Look for a mask rich in Kojic acid. This ingredient helps to even the skin color and treat hyperpigmentation.
The secret to getting rid of unwanted pimples has been sitting in your medicine cabinet for years and you didn’t even know it! Next time you wake up to a little red friend, follow these steps for your homemade acne spot treatment.
Drop an Aspirin tablet in a small dish with water.
When the tablet dissolves completely spread a thin layer of the white paste onto the problem area and let it dry.
Once the paste is dry, rinse off and pat face dry with a clean towel.
Your unwanted blemish is now drastically reduced in redness and inflammation.
Now leave it alone!
P.S. Always remember to wash your hands before touching your face to avoid transferring bacteria.

As much as we preach about skincare & sun protection, we know some of you beauties will still show up to work on Monday morning with a wicked sunburn! This may seem like a Mediterranean recipe, but it isn’t. Combine 1/2 an avocado peeled & pitted with 3 tbsp olive oil. Mash it together and smooth it onto your burn. Let it sit for 15 minutes then rinse.
The avocado is a natural anti-inflammatory so you can skip the Advil, and it hydrates the skin too. The olive oil softens the sun damaged skin immediately upon contact. Both ingredients add essential oils back into your skin. Ahhhhhhh!
