How to Air Dry Your Hair Like a Pro

Ask anyone who’s a slave to heat styling tools: It is downright brutal trying to blow dry hair when it’s hot outside. The end result usually isn’t as appealing as it would otherwise be, either—you usually have to grapple with an inordinate amount of frizz and poof thanks to the unbearable humidity. One way to avoid this problem is to simply go natural and air dry your mane. While it’s not the norm for everyone, it’s a great habit to adopt—not only can it prevent unsightly frizz, but it’s also better for your hair’s long-term health. Here, our tips for air drying like a pro!

Consider your towel:
First, be sure to extract as much water from your damp hair as possible. Pat it gently—don’t rub roughly the way you may guiltily do on occasion, or you’ll create stubborn frizz right off the bat—and do so while it’s still very wet. This will shorten your air-drying time. If you don’t have a soft, microfiber towel, try a cotton T-shirt, instead.

Comb it out:
Many make the mistake of using a basic hairbrush to detangle wet strands. The problem there is that it harshly tugs on your hair and causes breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or aWet Brush ($7.99) to gently yet effectively loosen tangles. The brush is specially designed to manage wet hair without causing damage, and it promotes healthier hair so that, over time, you’ll notice fewer split ends and far less breakage.

Curly hair:
Is your hair curly—in other words, a bit hard to manage even on the best of days? You absolutely need some substantial product to successfully air dry your hair. Try TIGI Curlesque Strong Mousse ($14.99) to help maintain control of wild curls. Simply apply it to your wet hair beginning at the ends and rake your fingers upward slowly. Scrunch gently with a cupped hand for best results.

Kinky hair:
A smoothing product is key to successfully air drying kinky hair without a lot of fuss. Minimize the possibility of unruliness by applying Joico JoiLotion Sculpting Lotion ($12.99), a light yet highly effective product that applies a medium-strength hold to your hair for a summer-friendly finish that won’t weigh down your locks. The alcohol-free formula won’t dry out your hair—instead, it boosts shine and allows your strands to dry smoothly.

Straight hair:
Straight hair may dry, fine, and limp, so it’s important to apply a product that helps boost volume and create body. TIGI S Factor Body Booster Plumping Spray($13.29) leaves behind soft strands, yet still, amplifies hair at the root. For best results, dunk your head and apply to the roots, then use your fingers to gently lift strands. (Bonus: You can apply it when your hair dries for a little extra boost, too!)

How to Have the Best Hair During Steamy Weather

Baby, it’s hot outside. While we can’t help but have a full-fledged love affair with rising temperatures and sunny skies, we also can’t stop thinking about the little side effects that conveniently come with being a warm-weather aficionado. Unfortunately, the more time you spend outside, the more likely it is that your hair will soak up the humidity, resulting in a frizzy, fuzzy mess. How best to cope? We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite products that are guaranteed to tame your hair throughout spring and summer.

Cleanse with…

Exposure to sunlight, chlorine, and salt water can do a number on your hair. A deeply hydrating cleanser, such as Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo ($13.99), drenches hair with nourishing and smoothing ingredients to restore strength and moisture. It’s just as important to use a product that effectively removes product and mineral buildup, like Bio Ionic Agave Clarifying Shampoo ($25). Using it gives your hair a fresh start by cleansing your scalp and strands and preparing it for anything from styling treatments to salt water.

Condition with…

Warm weather calls for a conditioner that blocks out humidity while protecting parched strands from further damage. Rusk Deep Shine Smooth Keratin Care Smoothing Conditioner ($11.99) leaves your hair soft, shiny, and more capable of standing up to even the harshest elements. That’s important if you plan to spend lots of time at the beach or the pool! Once or twice a week, treat your hair to Agadir Argan Oil Moisture Masque ($18.99). It’s a heavy-duty treatment enriched with a strengthening combination of argan oil, vitamin E, keratin protein, and antioxidants.

Control with…

Frizz is one of warm weather’s main hair woes. A product like John Masters Organics Dry Hair Nourishment & Defrizzer ($18.99) is ideal. It’s made with 100 percent organic plant and essential oils, including moisturizing jojoba, healing lavender, and shine-boosting rosemary, all of which work together to smooth out stubborn frizz. You can also use it to prevent split ends. If you’re headed out and need to maintain that sexy updo, spritz on some Big Sexy Hair Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray ($16.99) to lock in your style and prevent coarseness and frizz.

Protect with…

One of the best things you can do for your locks when it’s hot outside is simply to protect it. TIGI Bed Head Beach Bound Protection Spray ($12.99) works wonders if you plan to get soaked in salt water. It’s made with sunflower seed oil and grapefruit extract to protect your hair from heat (both sun and styling), and even contains a UV protectant to combat those harsh and harmful rays. Use it throughout the season to enjoy stronger, more resilient hair. For everyday use, nothing tops John Masters Organics Sea Mist Sea Salt Spray with Lavender ($15.99). It smells fabulous, soothes the scalp, adds volume, and lends your hair that enviable beach-babe look we all covet.

Start with clean, dry hair. Second-day hair can be easier to style, but if you’re doing that be sure to apply some TIGI Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo ($8.99). Just massage it into your roots to soak up excess oil and buildup.

Now it’s time to get started on your glamorous beach style. Apply a spray specifically formulated to give your hair that telltale texture, such as Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray ($14.95). It contains sea salt, which lends your hair that lively look. Simply spritz it on all over and scrunch gently with your fingers. Next, bring those waves to life with TIGI Foxy Curls Contour Crème ($11.99). This highly effective emollient does several things at once: it reduces frizz, smoothes wayward strands, resists humidity, and holds your waves in place.

To create beach waves with this product, rub a nickel-sized amount in between your hands. Separate your hair into sections, roping them off piece by piece into tight coils simply by twisting with your hands. While these coils press against your head, use your coated hand to scrunch them firmly. Then release.

And that’s it—no need to finish with hair spray or other styling products, or you risk losing that lovely texture and playful wave that makes this look such a summertime standout. You can find all of the products you need, plus more summer beach finds, at TheBeautyPlace.com.

Tutorial Tuesday – Sea Salt Spray Recipe

celebrity-beach-wavesIf you’re envious of the gorgeous beach waves that walk the red carpet, join the club! Almost all beachy wave hair tutorials tell you do use a sea-salt spray. Here is our favorite recipe for one that is super simple and gives you a Hollywood look! You will need: a clean spray bottle, 1 cup of water, 1 tsp of sea salt, 1 tsp of hair gel (you can steal your boyfriend’s for extra hold), and 4 drops of essential oil. The last ingredient is optional, but will add scent to your mixture.

Mix the above ingredients in your spray bottle and spritz onto damp hair. Scrunch up each piece you spray. Pair this look with a nice Sunless Tanner and you’ll look like you spent the day on the beach!

Beauty at the Beach

CC by Helga Weber

I love summer. All year long, I wait for summer to arrive so I can enjoy the refreshing beach and get a nice, healthy glow. I only ever wish that I can find a way to look good while I’m at the beach. No, I’m not talking about how fit my body may or may not be (though I’d like to know the easy shortcut to that, too). Sometimes, I see people that look great after a day at the beach. Their beach hair looks sexy and their un-made-up face looks fresh and healthy. I can’t speak for everyone – some of those people may be blessed with hair and skin that look good in any condition. I, on the other hand, need some assistance from some man-made products.

For your face, apply Murad Correcting Moisturizer. The tinted moisturizer soothes skin and evens out blotchy skin tone while it protects you from sun damage with SPF 15. It will look like your bare skin, only with a more balanced skin tone.

For your hair, apply Macadamia Natural Oil Nourish Leave-In Cream to wet hair after you are done with your swimming. The leave-in cream tames and softens your hair while it protects it from UV rays. If you STILL don’t feel like your hair can be trusted to look good, set it in a messy side braid AFTER you’ve applied the Macadamia Natural Oil Nourish Leave-In Cream and call it a day.

Then, go on to enjoy that I-look-good-without-trying look.
