Skincare 101: Everything You Need to Know

Choosing the right skincare products can be a tricky thing. Once you’ve settled on a regimen, you have to make sure you’re using your products in the right order, applying them at the right time of day, and treating your concerns effectively. It can be mind boggling simply navigating the skincare aisle at the drugstore! That’s why we’ve broken down the fine art of caring for your skin. Here’s everything you need to know.

Q: In what order should I use my skincare products?

It’s no good having a great collection of products if you aren’t applying them in the proper order. The first step is to remove all traces of dirt and debris with an effective cleanser formulated for your skin type. The goal is simply to start with a clean canvas. Make a commitment to exfoliate dry skin two to three times a week with a gentle scrub. Focus on those areas where clogged pores are most prominent, like your cheeks and nose.

Follow with a serum that’s packed with ingredients that target your skin’s unique needs. Formulas enriched with retinol’s and hyaluronic acids are designed to target aging, while nourishing oils lock in moisture for dry skin. Remember to pat your serum on—don’t rub. Next, pat eye cream on gently, taking care not to rub or tug the delicate skin in this area. Work your way from the outer corners of your eyes and down along the orbital bone. Then apply moisturizer. Your final step is sunscreen, which is essential if you’re headed outdoors.

Q: Can I use a face oil if I have oily skin?

It may sound counterintuitive, but face oils are remarkably effective even on oily skin. They key is not to go overboard in your usage, and to stick with nourishing ingredients that help balance your skin. We like Peter Thomas Roth Oilless Oil 100% Purified Squalene ($23.99) for its gentle, non-comedogenic formula. If you find that most oils feel too heavy, look for a product specifically formulated as lightweight. You might also want to add just a drop to your nighttime moisturizer instead of slicking it onto your skin full throttle. Nighttime is definitely an important qualifier, too: your skin is less oily at night, so it’s best to apply your face oil right before you hit the sack.

Q: What’s the difference between a hydrator and a moisturizer?

Thought the terms are often used interchangeably, hydration and moisturization are two different concepts. Hydrators are designed to increase your skin’s water content, while moisturizers lock in moisture to prevent that water content from being lost. This is why it’s advisable to apply moisturizer to slightly damp skin—it’s the water that keeps skin hydrated, while the moisturizer seals that hydration and keeps skin soft and supple. For extra dry skin, we love Skinmedia HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator ($329.89) to really ramp up your skin’s ability to combat fine lines while maintaining a smoother, healthier complexion.

Q: How long should I wait before applying sunscreen?

You’ve slathered sunscreen all over your face and body about 20 minutes before heading outside. You’re good to go—for now, at least. Pay attention to your sunscreen’s SPF rating. That number indicates how much time you can safely spend in the sun before your skin starts to show signs of damage (like pinkness or redness). As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to reapply sunscreen after two hours. If you’re using a water-resistant formula, note that their efficacy times may differ. So if you’re swimming or surfing, be sure to reapply as often as the packaging instructs. One of our favorite head-to-toe formulas is Avene Mineral Light Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ for Face and Body ($24.99).

Get the Look for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is one of the most wonderful days of the year for beauty junkies. Whether or not you’re part of a duo, you’re guaranteed to fall in love with the fabulous selection of pretty pinks and reds at TheBeautyPlace.com. Shop for date night, for a special friend (Valentine’s Day can easily be GALentine’s Day for your BFFs!), or for your very special self, and enjoy these picks that are destined to make this Valentine’s Day the best yet.

Give the gift of perfect skin! The Clarisonic Mia 1 in Electric Pink ($97.79) is designed to reduce impurities that may contribute to troubled skin. With regular use, it diminishes the appearance of pores, helps eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, and smoothes the complexion to leave behind a more radiant finish. If you’re a little lazy about your skincare routine or know someone who is, this is the ultimate kick needed to get into the habit—and see real results quickly.

You’ve always been told not to brush wet hair, but things have changed with the advent of the Wet Brush Detangle in Punchy Pink ($7.99). Not only is it sure to be the cutest thing on your vanity, it’s also guaranteed to be one of the most useful. Use it to detangle wet or dry strands by simply running it through from your roots down. It’s designed specifically not to damage, and it won’t tug or break your strands. Instead, it makes hair even more manageable and easier to style. So you can rock that glam Valentine’s Day ‘do you’ve been envisioning.

When better than date night to sport flushed cheekbones? Achieve the look with Tigi Cosmetics Glow Blush in Brilliance ($15.99), a warm pink with a golden finish. The result is natural, colorful, and effortlessly pretty—it’s not unlike the glow you might experience after jogging around the neighborhood. In a pinch, you can even use this color on your eyelids to brighten up your entire look. The formula is light, but you can build it up easily for a more intense finish.

Wanted: A creamy lipstick with a stay-put formula that you can slick on and go. Found: Jane Iredale PureMoist Lipstick ($19.99), which ticks all of the boxes and goes well beyond expectation to deliver gorgeous results. It’s available in dozens of colors, but if you’re feeling especially festive you might want to try Margi, a brazen, no-fuss red that will probably turn a few heads. If you love the Valentine’s Day color spectrum but want to play it a bit safer, try Lucy, a soft, juicy pink that flatters nearly every skin tone.

The warm, alluring scent of vanilla adds the perfect finishing touch to your Valentine’s Day routine. At this time of year, a thick, nourishing moisturizer is practically law, and we think the Bliss Vanilla + Bergamot Body Butter ($21.69) is an essential that really stands up to the challenge. It delivers lasting hydration and is loaded with free radical-busting vitamins. It also exudes a light, pleasant scent that combines a hint of vanilla with sweet almond. It lingers but isn’t overpowering, and your skin will feel amazing.

Everything You Need to Combat Winter Beauty Woes

Winter has a nasty habit of wreaking havoc on the skin and the hair. Harsh, dry air, combined with low levels of humidity creates the perfect storm. Suddenly your hair is static, your skin feels like sandpaper, and your hands are coarse. Don’t let the season get away with it! Here are five essential products from TheBeautyPlace.com that are destined to improve how you feel from head to toe.

Dry strands require extreme moisture. Give your hair the TLC it deserves with TIGI Bed Head Urban Anti+dotes Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner ($28.99). The products are formulated with hyper-hydrating ingredients that infuse locks with deep hydration. After just one wash, you’ll notice a difference. For hair that feels coarse and looks lackluster, supplement your regimen with TIGI Bed Head Urban Anti+dotes Recovery Treatment Mask ($14.89) at least once a week. It’s ideal for repairing damage, and all products are safe to use on color-treated hair.

It’s not uncommon for skin to become flaky and irritated during winter. Combat this by overhauling your skincare lineup for the season. PCA Skin Dry Skin Relief Bar ($22.99) is a good starting point: it’s a mild cleanser that works best when it’s left on the skin for a couple of minutes. During this time, it sloughs off those unsightly flakes, softens dry spots, and leaves behind a smooth finish. Unlike other cleansers, it won’t strip your skin.

You probably have already noticed that your lightweight lotion isn’t quite doing the trick for your face during winter. Switch to a thicker emollient, like Avene Hydrance Optimale Rich Hydrating Cream ($25.99). Mild and gentle, it’s infused with shea butter and is suitable to use on even the most sensitive skin types. For best results, apply when skin is slightly damp to lock in moisture.

Ordinary hand creams just won’t do during winter, either. The best choice is a formula that contains ultra-moisturizing ingredients. Bliss High Intensity Hand Cream ($12.99) fits the bill with its rich consistency and deeply hydrating oils of macadamia and grapeseed. It sinks in quickly, so skin doesn’t feel tacky or greasy, and its effects linger even after you wash your hands.

Winter can also increase your skin’s sensitivity. Look for unscented moisturizers loaded with nourishing ingredients, such as John Masters Organics Bare Unscented Body Lotion ($14.99). With sea kelp, coconut oil, milk thistle, and white tea extract, it’s as much a treatment for parched skin as it is a basic hydrator. It absorbs quickly, and can even be used on the face in a pinch thanks to its non-greasy finish.

We are also having a winter beauty recovery sale, just is time to get everything you need to combat your beauty woes. Sale ends on 2/3/2017 11:59 PM EST.

Quick Beauty Tip – From Lipstick to Lip Gloss!

quicktip-DIY-LipColor

Have you ever bought a lipstick color that you thought would suit you better as a lip gloss? Well you’re in luck! We have the solution for you.

What you will need is:

  1. Lipstick
  2. Toothpick
  3. Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly
  4. Double Boiler (or 2 pots that fit into each other)
  5. Stove  (NOTE: If you are under age please have a parent help or supervise you 🙂 )
  6. Contact lens case or an empty gel liner case.

First, fill your double boiler with water in the bottom container or fill the bigger pot with some water.  Bring the water to a simmer. Then, get your lipstick and twist it until the whole thing shows. Use your toothpick to cut the lipstick into the other pan. Grab some Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly and put it in the same pot. The more you use, the sheerer it will be. Put the pot into the boiling water and watch it melt. When it has completely melted, pour out the contents into the contact lens case (great to travel with) or in the empty gel liner case. Put it in the freezer so it can cool off and voila! you have your new lip gloss 🙂

Quick Beauty Tip – DIY Lip & Body Scrub

quicktip-DIY-LipBodyScrub

With the ending months of winter and the incoming months of spring, you don’t want to be the girl who has a fabulous manicure accompanied by dry, cracked hands. Here in Florida, winter seems to be nonexistent but no matter where you are or what season it is, we all should take 5 minutes to make this scrub at home with stuff you probably already have.

Scrubs give you the opportunity to increase the circulation in your body, have glowing skin, sensuous lips, and are great exfoliants! A two-for-one recipe, this DIY works wonders for your entire body and pout!

Here’s how it’s made:

  1. Get 1/4 cup of coarse sugar. If you don’t have coarse sugar, you can use brown sugar or salt
  2. 1/2 lemon
  3. 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil
  4. 1/8 cup of Olive oil
  5. Mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl until the coconut oil chunks have disappeared. Once it’s done,  it should be a creamy consistency.
  6. Scrub your hands with this for 2 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Do not use soap! This allows the remaining oils to stay on your body and soak in.
  7. Pat dry with a towel

I love, love, love this scrub! It leaves my skin baby soft! But if you do not have time for that just use the Bliss Lemon + Sage body Scrub & the Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub. You’ll love the results!

How To Make Your Beauty Products Last Longer

Squeezing_last_dropHere at TheBeautyPlace.com, we know beauty products can be pricey so we want to share some tips on how to get the most out of your favorite makeup and skincare products.  After all, everyone loves to save a little money!

Tip #1 – Use moisturizer & primer on your face before applying makeup. Using either of these products underneath foundation will ensure long lasting coverage.  Added Benefit: it won’t dry out or crack your makeup.  You can also use an eyeshadow primer to keep eye makeup in place all day or night long.

Tip #2 – Moisturize Again! Similarly, moisturizer helps maintain a glowing tan longer whether it is from the sun or from a bottle.  The added moisture on the skin locks the bronze in place for a few extra days.

Tip #3 – Add olive oil to conditioners. When it comes to haircare, adding some olive oil to your daily conditioner, or deep conditioning hair masque can stretch the product out for a few more uses.

Tip #4 – Spray perfume in pulse spots.  Make that yummy spritz of perfume go the extra mile by spraying it in the correct spots.  The back of the knees, behind the ears, wrists and décolletage emanate heat from your skin and sends the scent into the air around you.

Tip #5 – Use top coat.  Splurging for a manicure during the holiday season can become more of a drag than a pleasure when it chips in a couple days. Applying a layer of clear top coat to nails every other day ensures a longer lasting manicure.
