The Perfect Labor Day Look

Labor Day provides the perfect excuse to go all out with your makeup because, after all, nothing screams patriotism quite like red and blue makeup. Whether you plan to head to a family barbeque or dance the night away with your gals, we’ve got you covered with this super easy yet glamorous look.

First, start off with the most essential product: moisturizer! Avene’s Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Cream  is formulated with thermal spring water, making it gentle enough for sensitive skin types. More importantly though, the antioxidant-enriched cream contains SPF 25 so you’ll be protected against harsh UVA and UVB rays if you’re outside.

Once you’ve got a smooth base, glide on BareMinerals’ Prime Time Brightening Foundation Primer  to even out skin texture and conceal pores. Apply BareMinerals’ BarePro Liquid Foundation  for breathable, full coverage that will last in even the most unfavorable conditions as it’s resistant to sweat, water, and heat. Like the moisturizer, it also contains SPF so you’re getting an extra layer of sun protection.

Keep your foundation flawless by setting it with Dermablend’s Compact Solid Setting Powder . One light layer of this transparent powder will prevent your makeup from smudging and transfering. Plus, you can take the compact on the go if you need to mattify your T-zone.

Time for the fun part—whip out some blue eyeliner! Tigi Cosmetics’ Perfect Eyeliner  in “Blue” glides onto the eyelid effortlessly thanks to moisturizing ingredients like Jojoba oil. You can either apply it to your waterline for a subtle flash of color, or make your eyes really pop by lining both your upper and bottom lash lines. The liner also doubles as an eyeshadow since it comes with a smudger so you can soften the look. To finish the eyes, swipe on Glo Minerals’ Water Resistant Mascara  for smudgeproof lashes.

When it comes to lips, a matte formulation is essential for long events so go for Glo Minerals’ Suede Matte Crayon  in “Sorbet.” The chunky pencil lasts for eight hours but won’t dry out your lips as it’s enriched with shea butter and powerful antioxidants. Complement the lipstick by swirling Glo Minerals Blush  in “Begonia” on the apples of your cheeks.

Now that the makeup look is complete, your hair needs some TLC. The look works well with either straight or curly hair so it’s entirely up to you to decide which you want. For this look though, we’re going to tell you how to achieve gorgeous bouncy waves with Bio Ionic’s GoldPro Smoothing & Styling Iron.

But before even picking up the iron, prep with Hot Sexy Hair’s Protect Me 450ºF Hot Tool Protection Hairspray  to defend hair from harsh temperatures. After coating your hair with the spray, you’re ready to curl. The technique is simple—grab a thin lock of hair that’s about an inch wide, clamp the iron down, then twist the iron away from your face while running it down the entire lock. Leave the ends a bit straight for a more modern look and then you’re good to go!

How to Protect Your Hair During the Summer

Just as you slather on the sunscreen during summer, you need to be sure that your hair is protected, too. There are several ways to ensure that your strands stay in shape no matter how much heat and humidity comes their way. Here’s how to accomplish that while ensuring that every day is a great hair day.

Cover It Up

Occasionally a heat wave rolls through and makes it impossible to manage your hair. Use this opportunity to add a few chic hats to your wardrobe. They’ll protect your mane from dryness—and as a bonus, you’ll also shield your skin from damaging ultraviolet rays.

Use UV Protection

It’s just as important to protect your hair from ultraviolet rays as it is your skin. Overexposure to the sun can lead to dryness, brittle strands, and even fading color. A product such as TIGI Bed Head Beach Freak Moisturizing Detangler Spray ($12.99) contains a potent UV complex that is formulated to filter out those potentially harmful rays that might cause your hair to look less than healthy. It also includes seaweed extract, which is enriched with protein to strengthen and prevent dryness.

Prevent Chlorine Overexposure

You can spend as much time in the pool as you desire—that’s the beauty of summer, after all. But all that time splashing around comes at a price for your mane. Take the time to protect it from chlorine, which can cause extreme dryness and, in some cases, even cause your strands to turn green. A little bit of conditioner is all you need. Simply apply a dime-sized amount to damp hair, comb through, and throw your hair in a bun. Try Bain de Terre Meadow Balancing Conditioner ($11.99)—it’s safe for daily use, smells great, and is suitable for all hair types.

Protect from Overheating

If you’re a slave to your hairdryer and flat iron throughout the year, it’s important to do one of two things. Either take a break f
rom using those tools completely—usually easier said than done—or protect your hair from the effects of heat styling. Try Hot Sexy Hair Prep Me 450° Heat Protection Blow Dry Primer ($12.99), which helps reduce breakage and minimize brittle strands. Bonus: It leaves hair ultra smooth and silky!

Get Your Wave On

Although it’s tempting to throw your hair up in a topknot or ponytail every day of the week, there are styles that you can achieve without heat. By adding Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray ($29.99) to your routine, you can rock an amazing look that channels a tropical vibe. A little spritz from top to bottom on wet hair is all you need to style your mane. Finger comb it through for best results and try not to touch—you’ll love the natural, super-soft wave that results.

3 Weird Beauty Hacks That Work

Convenience is everything these days—and that means we’re all jumping aboard the bandwagon when it comes to crazy-but-true beauty hacks that may not exactly be typical, but definitely work. It’s not so much that they’re impossible to try, but they just aren’t solutions you’d think to try at first. From using anti-chafe gel as a makeup primer (yes, really) to rubbing potatoes for fading scars, there are many bizarre beauty tips out there that actually work. Here are three of them—plus three products you can use instead if you’re a little too squeamish for the weirdness.

1. Anti-Chafing Makeup Primer

We’re still not sure about this one—but there are tons of women who swear on their beauty collections that it works. Many swear by Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel for its priming purposes. One of its primary ingredients is dimethicone, which is included in many makeup primers. At a fraction of the price of big-name brands, it helps makeup stay put all day long. If you’re a little uneasy about using it, though, you can always snag a bottle of bareMinerals Prime Time Brightening Foundation Primer ($20.99). It contains vitamins C and E, both of which help leave skin radiant and soft.

2. Potato Scar Treatment

Odd but true: potatoes might help clear up unsightly skin imperfections, such as acne scars and dark spots. If you use it, be sure to slice the potato thinly and apply it to your skin in small sections to be sure that you don’t suffer a negative reaction. The potato’s natural moisture is thought to have natural mild bleaching properties. Of course, not everyone wants to rub a vegetable on their face. In that case, give SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel ($26.99) a try—it’s infused with exfoliating lactic acid and wound-fighting centella asiatica.

3. Beer Rinse

Not quite a new concept, rinsing hair with beer is one of those age-old tricks to which many women attribute their shiny manes. Along with the glistening finish, you might even notice that the beer helps repair damage and rebuild hair that’s been weakened due to heat or environmental stress. But if you don’t want malt and hops in the shower, try nuts instead. Applying Macadamia Moisturizing Rinse ($16.99) to your strands for at least a minute helps moisturize, detangle, shine, and nourish even the most delicate, dehydrated hair. And it smells great, too.

Your Iron Can Do More Than Just Straighten

Flat Iron Styling Tricks

My flat iron won my personal VIP beauty award the day I first used it. In just minutes, it took my thick, wavy, sometimes uncontrollable hair under its wing and transformed it into the smooth, silky, straight hair of my dreams. And for years, I used it solely for that purpose—to combat my hair’s natural texture and give it a sleeker appearance.

But did you know that flat irons are capable of doing so much more? At the time, I didn’t, and now that I do I regret wasting so much valuable flat iron time using it only to achieve one style! Here are several fun, chic styles you can achieve using your flat iron.

Get Cool, Beachy Waves

Who knew? It turns out a flat iron can give you those beachy waves all of us covet throughout summer. The easiest way to achieve the look is to begin by braiding your hair. My preference is to create three or four braids, but this is dependent on your hair’s volume. (Even one braid works if your hair is on the fine side.) Follow by running your flat iron over each braid, slowly working down and applying gentle pressure. When you’re done, undo each braid and run your fingers through your hair for an effortless, tousled look. Finish with a spritz of TIGI Session Series Salt Spray ($13.99) to increase the textured finish and combat humidity.

Curl Your Hair

You can also use your flat iron just like a traditional curling iron—and in many cases, you might even achieve a more natural looking curl with your flat iron. To get a tight coil with heavy bounce, grip your hair between the iron’s plates just as you would if you were straightening. As you slide the iron down, slowly twist the iron in your hand so that your hair wraps around the barrel of the iron. It should wrap in a complete rotation. Hold this for a moment before gently releasing the hair. It should fall into a bold curl. If you want to loosen the curls up, run a comb or your fingers through your hair and shake it out. For great results, try FHI HEAT Eps Black Diamond Digital Hair Iron ($168.89). Its one-inch size makes it easy to achieve many different looks.

flat-iron-s-waveCreate a Vintage “S” Wave

Ever wish you could emulate the glamorous look of your favorite old-world screen stars? I do, too—and if only it was as easy as waking up in the morning and being as naturally elegant as Hollywood’s most classic sirens. But a flat iron can do at least a portion of the job just as well. The vintage “S” wave is one you’ll recognize immediately. It’s associated with the Roaring Twenties, a look that’s just so iconic you can’t help but appreciate its beauty. The easiest way to get the look is to push a section of hair into an “S” shape (best achieved by pushing it upward), clamping down on this section with your flat iron, and holding to set the wave. Then repeat, working your way down until your entire mane is complete. Hold the waves with a setting product, like Big Sexy Hair Spritz & Stay Intense Hold Fast Drying Hair Spray ($14.99).

Get the Look: How to Achieve Sexy Tousled Hair

Do you ever stop in your tracks when you see a woman with an absolutely glorious mane? I know I do—especially when that hair is casually tousled to perfection. It’s that look that’s so undone and so unfussy that somehow it just seems like the style to have. Do you have what it takes to pull off that chic, beachy hair? Of course! Here’s how to make that tousled look yours, with a few products from TheBeautyPlace.com.

Start with clean, dry hair. Second-day hair can be easier to style, but if you’re doing that be sure to apply some TIGI Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo ($8.99). Just massage it into your roots to soak up excess oil and buildup.

Now it’s time to get started on your glamorous beach style. Apply a spray specifically formulated to give your hair that telltale texture, such as Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray ($14.95). It contains sea salt, which lends your hair that lively look. Simply spritz it on all over and scrunch gently with your fingers. If your hair needs a little extra boost, apply it to your roots and lift your hair slightly to increase volume. (Bonus: You can use this directly on wet hair, too; just spray on and let it air dry!)

tigi-foxy-curls

Next, bring those waves to life with TIGI Foxy Curls Contour Crème ($11.99). This highly effective emollient does several things at once: it reduces frizz, smoothes wayward strands, resists humidity, and holds your waves in place.

To create beach waves with this product, rub a nickel-sized amount in between your hands. Separate your hair into sections, roping them off piece by piece into tight coils simply by twisting with your hands. While these coils press against your head, use your coated hand to scrunch them firmly. Then release.

And that’s it—no need to finish with hair spray or other styling products, or you risk losing that lovely texture and playful wave that makes this look such a summertime standout. You can find all of the products you need, plus more summer beach finds, at TheBeautyPlace.com.

How To Choose The Right Hair Brush For You!

choosing-the-right-hair-brushThe right hair brush can dramatically affect the condition of your hair. Be sure to be working with the correct brush to get that marvelous hair you’re striving for because gorgeous hair is just a brush away.

Detangle

Hair is structurally weaker when wet, so rough brushing can cause snags and tears. Gently loosen your tangles with a brush that has widely spaced bristles designed to detangle wet hair.

Curl

If you want soft curls without using a curling iron, use a round brush with a ventilated metal, thermal, or ionic barrel. These barrels efficiently trap and circulate heat when you blow dry, plus you’ll cut drying time in half using the ventilated design. The Bio Ionic Round Wave Brush is great for creating curled or wavy hairstyles and looks.

Smooth

A flat, boar bristled paddle brush is perfect for smoothing hair after a blow dry. A flat paddle has a larger surface area designed to reach larger sections of your hair. The Macadamia Paddle Brush with Boar bristles is a quality hair brush that is gentle on the scalp. This brush will create a naturally smooth straight finish.

Straighten

You can blow dry all hair lengths and textures straight with a round brush. Choose metal, synthetic or natural bristles depending on your hair texture and condition. The longer your hair is, the larger the brushes diameter should be.

Style Long

A mixed bristle brush is best for long hair. The natural boar bristles polish the hair while the synthesize nylon ones gently grab and hold sections of your hair. Look for a brush with an air cushion, which allows the brush to glide over painful knots that could potentially break long locks.

Volumize

Vented brushes work wonders for volume! The open design evenly circulates air throughout your strands when you blow dry, resulting in a light, and bouncy finish with tons of movements.

Tease

Use a narrow brush with rows of densely packed bristles to backcomb your hair and smooth out the top layers.

Remember… “a hair on the head is worth two on the brush”

Summer Hair – Protection and Styles

Summer is here and our hair can get quite uncooperative with us during this season. Humidity is the devil on our hairs’ shoulder telling it to do bad things. Aside from being uncooperative, our hair can take a major beating from the summer’s heat, chlorine and salt water. Make sure to properly care for and protect your hair while you find the styles that work best in the summer climate.

Always wear a thermal protector to protect hair from heat and UVA/UVB rays such as the Bio Ionic Thermal Active Nourishing Silk Leave In. Also, use a weekly moisturizing masque (CHI Nourish Intense Coarse Silk Masque) to hydrate your hair.

Following hair tips are what I recommend as the best and easiest ways to manage your natural hair type during the summer season, but keep in mind that the real magic that controls frizz and makes these hairstyles work, is the right hair products.

Natural, Beachy look
Use a spray like the TIGI Rockaholic Groupie Texturizing Spray Pomade for beach-like hair texture. Spray it on moist hair and allow it to air-dry for a piecey, wavy look.

CC by aznviolaguy

Straight Hair
To wear your hair straight, use a lightweight serum like BioSilk Silk Therapy to control frizz. Apply the serum before blow-drying and then add a few drops after you style.

CC by Kennedy Garrett

Chic ponytails
Rock a casual, low ponytail or a higher ponytail with a small section of hair wrapped over top of the hair tie. A loose side ponytail, on wavy hair is especially beachy.

CC by Pulicciano

Loose Curls
Humidity can bring down the fun of curls and heavy hair products can weigh curls down or cause build-up. To maintain springy, summertime curls, scrunch a lightweight product like the Curly Sexy Hair Curl Power Enhancer onto curls.
