What to Do When Your Skin Freaks Out

We’ve all been there. One day your skin is completely fine, and the next morning it looks like something out of a horror movie. Whether it’s an unfortunate allergic reaction to something mysterious, a surprise breakout on your chin, or some ruddiness that doesn’t seem to want to budge, there’s no easy way around the fact that your skin is simply freaking out. The good news is that we have some solutions for your serious skin woes. Here’s what to do when…

Your Lips Are Chapped

You try your best to handle your lip game. And usually it’s pretty easy to keep them moist, but during the colder months of the year your skin—including your lips—has a mind of its own. To the rescue comes Glo Skin Beauty Lip Revival ($25.99). This high-impact treatment is formulated to drench lips with moisture and improve moisture levels so that your lips stay softer for longer. Use it at night to obtain lasting results.

Your Acne Scars Are In Effect

Acne scars don’t just develop overnight, but if you’ve just recovered from a serious breakout there’s a good chance you’re dealing with some lingering pigmentation issues. Bid farewell to that dark spot by applying SkinCeuticals Phyto+ ($78.99), a highly effective lightening gel enriched with natural ingredients designed to gently lighten skin in the areas that need it most. It’s free of hydroquinone, too, which means it’s great even for the most sensitive skin types.

Your Dryness Is Unstoppable

Winter has a habit of wreaking havoc on the skin, and it often seems like no matter how much you treat it you can’t quite stay on top of all of the dryness. The Revision Skincare Hydrating Serum ($55.99) makes an amazing addition to any dry-skin routine. Don’t be fooled by its lightweight consistency; it’s loaded with moisturizing ingredients that flood your skin with hydration and give it a plump, healthy finish. Use it before bed to combat dryness and signs of premature aging.

Your Skin Is Bright Red

There’s nothing like waking up, refreshed from a great night’s sleep, only to discover that your complexion resembles Rudolph’s nose. While it’s tempting to just slather on several layers of makeup and go about your day, that won’t exactly solve the problem in the long run. Treat your ruddiness with La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 ($11.99). It’s formulated to gently heal even the most sensitive skins, even those recovering from procedures or suffering from dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis.

Your Acne Is Out of Control

Stubborn acne is an annoying skin woe that can often seem insurmountable. Peter Thomas Roth Acne-Clear Invisible Dots ($21.99) are infused with salicylic acid and tea tree oil and are designed to target only the skin that’s affected. This helps reduce the telltale dryness that many acne medications cause, while effectively treating even the most difficult blemishes. Wear them throughout the night, or during the day if you don’t plan to leave the house.

How To: Make Your Eyes Look Bigger

Just a few simple tweaks to your makeup routine is all it takes to emphasize your eyes! Big eyes appear youthful, wide-awake and healthy. We aren’t all born with oversized peepers though, and that’s where some artful makeup tricks come into play.

First of all, you need to define your eyebrows. Groomed arched eyebrows create a flattering frame for the eyes. And anything that accentuates the eyes is going to make them appear larger. Youngblood Enhanced Brows Kit ($32.99) contains three products to help you achieve the ultimate brows! Want to learn a bit more on brows we have the perfect guide here.

Create some shadows: A matte, warm brown color will help to create some dimension and make your eyes pop.The bareMinerals READY Eyeshadow ($18.99) contains 2 blendable shades that can help you create the shadows that will make your eyes look bigger.

Now we brighten! By adding some light to your eyes by placing shimmer at the inner corners and below your eyebrows, will give the appearance of more open & awaken eyes. The Jane Iredale Eye Highlighter Pencil – White/Pink ($11.99) is a dual-ended pencil designed to highlight eyes and face. You can instantly wake up tired eyes and give eyes a lift with this white and pink pencil.

Filling in your waterline with a dark liner can look sultry paired with smoky, diffused eye shadow, but it can also make your eyes look about half their size. For a bigger-is-better look, color the waterline with a flat, white eye pencil instead to instantly open and brighten them beautiful eyes. Our top pick is the Jane Iredale White Eye Pencil ($10.99) it won’t pull or tug at your lids. This an essential tool for this makeup! P.S this also makes your eyes look whiter.

Mascara, mascara and more mascara! Mascara is the perfect way to enhance the lower part of the eye without overdoing it. The bareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara – Intense Black ($17.99) creates larger-than-life lashes. This mascara helps lengthen, thicken, and separate lashes for volume you can see.

Wait, did we say mascara? Just in case, apply some more!

How to Wear Hyper-Charged Blush

While it’s been the norm to wear just a pop o flight blush for years, the trend recently has shifted to a bolder, more intense look. It’s not for the timid, but it turns out anyone can wear a bright blush when it’s applied the right way—and in the right color, of course. Here, are the best shades to wear, how to pull off that deeper hue, and how to ensure that that the rest of your makeup doesn’t compete with the color.

The real key to pulling off those brighter-than-bright shades that look a little alarming in the packaging is to use a cream formula. Given their malleable consistency, they’re much easier to blend into the skin, and you can easily tone it down just a touch if you feel you’ve been a bit too heavy-handed with your application. And if you happen to want more color, you just need to tap a bit more onto your cheekbones to achieve the desired look.

So what’s the best way to accomplish this? You need to play with texture. Cream formulas don’t sit well if they’re applied over powder, so bear that in mind if you’re tempted to layer it over powder blush or even a powder foundation. The goal is to move from one creamy consistency to another, so that the two work together instead of against each other.

Of course, not all cream blushes are the same. The key is to select a formula that is truly creamy—one that doesn’t skip and bump as you attempt to rub it into your skin, and that leaves your complexion glowing with a healthy flush. We’re big proponents of Youngblood Luminous Crème Blush ($20.99) for that reason. Its oil-free formula is extremely light and airy, and it blends beautifully into the skin.

Don’t be taken aback by the devilishly dark hue in the pot—it looks incredibly fierce, but once applied it’s easy to bring down to a more natural (yet very noticeable) level. The idea is to work your way up to the point where hyper-charged is totally hyper-normal for you. That’s why a cream formula is so genius—it builds up nicely and creates beautiful definition.

To achieve the best results, we suggest a tool like bareMinerals Angled Face Brush ($17.99). Its slightly geometric cut allows for more precise application to the areas you really want to cover. Begin by applying color to the apples of your cheeks. Blend in a slightly circular motion, taking the brush upward and away from your cheekbones to your temples. This creates a slight “C” configuration that appears the most natural. Be sure to blend like crazy to achieve a soft flush.

What if powder is your formula of choice? No worries at all—the genius of Tigi Cosmetics Glow Blush ($12.99) is that it’s fairly foolproof. Remember to go light with the initial touch, because this is a heavily pigmented product that doesn’t demand hard-hitting application. We love using wider brushes with powder products, as they leave behind the kind of impish glow that is usually only seen on magazine covers. The Jane Iredale White Fan Blush Brush ($12.99) is an outstanding choice for its broad bristles and ability to pick up just the right amount of product.

After running it over the powder, tap away any excess and swirl away onto your cheekbones. Again, use a light hand to begin, and feel free to build it up after the first application. Remember that the brush is your friend—the fan silhouette is specifically designed to produce a softer, more natural look. Yet we’re after a hyper-charged complexion, remember? So repeat the process twice if you want to really amplify that color even more.

What good is all that hard work if the color doesn’t last? The beauty of wearing brighter blushes is that they have a tendency to stick around a bit longer. That said, you can prevent fading by applying Jane Iredale Balance Hydration Spray ($25.99) as your final step. Not only will it lock your makeup in place, but it also helps moisturize and retain a fresh appearance all day long. You’re guaranteed to have the best skin in the place thanks to your brilliant glow!

We’ve all been there and that’s why we’ve put together the perfect look just in time for back to school! Check it out!

Keeping your makeup natural and effortless will help to avoid looking overdone, and also speeds up your morning routine. We recommend to go for a BB Cream instead like Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream ($29.99) this cream helps cut down a consuming beauty-routine. Providing even coverage, it helps diminish the appearance of blemishes and fine lines. It helps create a smooth and supple texture with a dewy finish.

You probably don’t want to put much make up for school because you like it to keep it simple. We get it, and we support that! However, you cannot skip your window
frames! Fill in your natural brows with a pencil that is two shades lighter for darker hair or two shades darker for lighter hair. Glo Minerals Brow Powder Duo ($18.99) are powders that are specially made to match all brow colors. They are designed to fill in any areas of less hair of the eyebrow you would like to fill in.

The best secret to make your eyes look more awake is by applying some mascara! You don’t want to look like you just woke up five minutes ago, so try the Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die for ($16.99) and don’t leave the house without it! This product is formulated to help lashes look longer, thicker and fuller without clumping, smudging or flaking.
To keep with the simplicity of the look, always add a swipe of your favorite nude or pink lipstick. bareMinerals Mini Moxie Plumping Lip Gloss Collection ($23.99) has many options to match your lipstick with your mood or even wear a different one each week! These goof-proof glosses are totally school-ready, just toss these minis in your bag and take them with you!

On the other hand, when you’re starting school, you might still have that summer vibe. However, really bright eye shadow combinations can be distracting and a little over-the-top for a day at school. If you want to add a pop of color, try it in smaller proportions like blue eyeliner! Tigi Cosmetics Perfect Eyeliner, tone “Peacock” ($11.99) easily glides onto the eyelid without stretching the delicate skin around the eye. You can get this pencil not only in blue, but also in purple and green

These are just some of the step you can include on your morning routine to go back to class in style! Hope you liked it, enjoy the rest of the summer!

How To: Ace The Red Smoky Eye Look!

It’s official! — red/pink eye shadow is the new neutral. With stars like Ruth Negga, Lily Collins, and even Queen Bey turning up in pink eyeshadow, pink blush and bright red lips, the combo is proving to be a real stunner — and a refreshing departure from the typical red lips and black, winged liner pairing we see this time of year.

Though it’s a risky shade, it can be surprisingly easy to pull off with the proper placement and blending skills. Choosing the right shade depends on your skin tone, and experimenting with the color base will help make sure you choose the right shade of red for you. However, to create this look, the Tigi Cosmetics HD Quad Eyeshadow ($19.99) has the perfect red tone that goes with almost every skin tone, they also go on smooth and ensure long-lasting wearability!

Also, don’t forget you’ll need to add some orange to the corners to make it a little softer and less dramatic. The Glo Minerals Elemental Eyes Collection ($33.99) this palette includes eight eyeshadows that will help you to perfectly get the smoky red look.

After you applied and blended the eye shadows, define the entire eye with a brown eye pencil, lining the upper and lower lash line so no skin is showing. Actually, we have the perfect product for that! Check out the Tigi Cosmetics Perfect Eyeliner ($11.99) this pencil easily glides onto the eyelid without stretching the delicate skin around the eye.

To get this perfect look, apply a few coats of volumizing mascara. The more, the better! bareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara – Intense Black ($17.99) creates larger-than-life lashes. This mascara helps lengthen, thicken, and separate lashes for volume you can see.

Last but not least, an outstanding red smoky eye look needs to come along with tons of highlighter! Jane Iredale In Touch Highlighter ($20.99) illuminates skin and adds a glow to any look. Shine bright babe!

BAKED PERFECTION

Contouring then strobing, now baking?

The makeup world is continuously evolving and we are absolutely amazed at this revived trend.

Yes – revived. The drag queen community has been using the baking technique to help set heavy stage makeup and it works – makeup is always flawless.

Baking involves using your body heat to help set makeup resulting in a smooth, crease-less finish. Even Kim Kardashian-West’s makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic uses this technique!

The trick involves layering setting powder thickly and allowing it to “cook”  into your foundation and concealer. As shown in the photo from Heidi Hamoud’s YouTube tutorial, it helps highlight the covered areas – underneath eyes, forehead and chin. The result is a flawless finish with contoured cheeks.

So how do we begin?

1. Apply moisturizer, primer, and foundation. This method can be drying so the moisturizer is extremely important. You may also want to include an eye moisturizer to help hydrate the area as this method does focus on the eye area.

2. Apply concealer under the eyes. Dab on from the apples of your cheeks towards your temples. Keep going towards the hairline for some serious contour. Blend in with a damp makeup sponge.

3. Use translucent powder to set the base of the makeup.

4. To “bake” or “cook your makeup, use a wedge sponge and dampen it with a setting spray or facial mist. Then dip the sponge into the translucent powder used in Step 3 and apply it generously under eyes, chin, jawline and middle of forehead. Let it bake anywhere from 5-30 minutes. We suggest 10 minutes for great results but if you have time, go for all 30!

5. Dust off the powder with a fluffy brush. If you want to blend any rough edges, apply pressed powder on the brush and use that to dust off the translucent powder.

We love how this makeup look leaves our makeup look flawless.

Tutorial Tuesday – Dramatic Winged Eyeliner

The trick to dramatic winged eyeliner is to use a liquid eyeliner and draw the outlines first.

Start at the inner corner of your eyelid and apply a thin line towards the outer corner. (you can fill in the space later).

Then create a small wing from the bottom, outer corner of your eye towards your temple.

Keep this small as the look will be dramatic without being a thick facial stripe.

Connect the top and bottom line with a point then fill in the space.

This is a beautiful look for a night out!

Quick Beauty Tip – No Mess Mascara Application

Next time someone wants to give you their unwanted business card, don’t decline or toss it! Keep a collection of business cards in your vanity for mascara application. Since mascara should be applied last as a finishing touch,  it often can create a smudgy mess. Avoid this by placing a business card right up against your lash line. Apply mascara as usual, only the excess makeup will smudge onto the card instead of your perfectly shadowed eyelids! quicktip-business-card-lashes
