Did anyone else get a vampy feel from Selena Gomez at the AMA’s?

We did!

She looked amazing on the red carpet with a sunset, smoky eye to complement her red dress.

Her copper, red infused eye makeup paired with hazel contacts drew us in and left us in awe.

#GETTHELOOK

Step 1 Prime eyelids. Using a brightening primer like this one will help add dimension to the eye.

Step 2 Light cream color eye shadow set the crease and brow bone area. We like Jane Iredale’s Oyster.

Step 3 Blend into your crease a copper eye shadow. Jane Iredale’s Triple Eyeshadow – Triple Cognac has shades that can be used. Be sure to focus on the outer area and winging it outward.

Step 4 Blend the edges with a clean brush.

Step 5 Use a red shadow to build definition on top of the copper hue. We like the darker shade in TIGI Cosmetics – Flawless.

Step 6 On the lid, layer another red shade. You can play with the types of reds you would like to use. In Selena’s look, there are many red-wine colors used. Youngblood in Bordeaux can be used.

Step 7 Make sure all the shadows are blended. Use the same shadow as in Step 6 to line the lower lash line. Line the inside of the lower lash line with a burgundy eyeliner or black if preferred.

Step 8 Use a volumizing mascara and voila!

THE MAKEUP TAX: IS IT WORTH IT?

A hot topic of conversation this past summer, the “makeup tax” is something that has affected women, from teenagers to adults, since as far as anyone can remember.

What is it?

The time and money spent to apply makeup.

In an article by Olga Khazan in The Atlantic, she describes how the average woman can spend $15,000 or more in her lifetime on cosmetics. Making $60 billion on average every year, the cosmetics industry is not waning.

That is just in the finances department. The second matter of question is the time invested by women.

In 2014, The Today Show conducted a survey demonstrating that women spend on average 2 weeks out of the year on their appearance. What’s the breakdown? 55 minutes every day or 335 hours every year.

With magazine covers flashing shiny lips and dewy skin wherever men and women turn, wearing makeup has become the socially acceptable norm.

In studies conducted, women that wear makeup experience a confidence boost, garner respect and affection from friends and co-workers, and fare better in job interviews.

While men and women can agree on shopping for the basics – shaving cream, shampoo, etc. – men typically do not worry about purchasing cosmetics or the time spent every day applying it.

So how do we feel about it?

Whether you prefer going Au natural, low-maintenance, or full-on glamorous, all women are beautiful. We love the feeling we get when we are done up, we can’t lie, but going natural has beauty and a confidence booster in itself as well.

However you feel comfortable, empowered, and beautiful is how you should be.

We would love to hear from our readers – is the makeup tax an issue for you? #WeWantToKnow

HOW TO USE COLOR-CORRECTING CONCEALER

e4c1e95614e72952bc7ff4a5a908ca9eConcealers are like erasers in a container. Blemishes, dark circles, pigmentation – this product does it all.

Even the staff that is low maintenance on makeup during the week use concealer religiously.

But which color should you use? The editors at TheBeautyPlace.com have categorized the issues by color – we got you covered!

Match Your Skin Tone

Use a concealer that matches your skin tone to conceal blemishes.

Green

Green concealers are great for those that battle dermatitis, rosacea or even a mild sunburn. By using it after priming and before applying foundation, it helps conceal redness triggered by any of these skin conditions.

Lavender, Lilac

Also to be applied after priming skin and before foundation, lavender concealers helps neutralize sallow, yellow tones to brighten skin’s appearance.

Yellow

Another complexion brightener, yellow concealers helps soften signs of redness while adding warmth to the skin.

Salmon, Pink

Ideal for dark circles – hands down. (We also have heard about a red lipstick trick to conceal dark circles, so this totally makes sense!) Use it especially to remove blue or gray undertones. We wouldn’t use it anywhere else on the face though so keep it to the area to avoid any skin blotchiness.

Do you have any other suggestions for concealers? #WeWantToKnow

Beauty Tip: Double your matching skin tone concealer as a primer for eyelids and lips if needed.

CELEBRITY SPOTLIGHT: AMERICAN ULTRA PREMIERE – KRISTEN STEWART

kristen stewartFierce. That’s what we would use to describe Kristen Stewart’s beauty look at the premiere of her movie American Ultra.

She look effortlessly cool and exuded a punk rock vibe. The main event?

Her cat eye.

Inspired by Edie Sedgewick and the playsuit by Zuhair Murad that Stewart wore, makeup artist Jillian Dempsey made the usual cat eye bold and graphic.

The rest of the look was kept demure – nudes and mattes – to keep the focus on the eyes and the great playsuit.

Her hairstyle was touchable and tousled sealing this look together.

#GetTheLook:

Extend the flick by bringing it further out towards the brow. Use bold lines and blend for a thicker look. (Beauty Tip: If you’re looking for high pigmentation, use a black shadow to intensify it.)

Add a swipe of eyeliner along the waterline to help frame the eyes.

Apply a subtle amount of blush and keep your lips nude.

We love this look for a party since there’s no worry about having it smudge!

Quick Beauty Tip – Use Shimmer As An Eye Enhancer

quicktip-highlight-inner-cornerThis quick beauty tip can come in handy year round!

In order to make eyes stand out, apply shimmer eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eye. This technique has a brightening effect. It reduces the appearance of dark circles and is a great alternative to black eye liner around the eyes.

Quick Beauty Tip – From Lipstick to Lip Gloss!

quicktip-DIY-LipColor

Have you ever bought a lipstick color that you thought would suit you better as a lip gloss? Well you’re in luck! We have the solution for you.

What you will need is:

  1. Lipstick
  2. Toothpick
  3. Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly
  4. Double Boiler (or 2 pots that fit into each other)
  5. Stove  (NOTE: If you are under age please have a parent help or supervise you 🙂 )
  6. Contact lens case or an empty gel liner case.

First, fill your double boiler with water in the bottom container or fill the bigger pot with some water.  Bring the water to a simmer. Then, get your lipstick and twist it until the whole thing shows. Use your toothpick to cut the lipstick into the other pan. Grab some Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly and put it in the same pot. The more you use, the sheerer it will be. Put the pot into the boiling water and watch it melt. When it has completely melted, pour out the contents into the contact lens case (great to travel with) or in the empty gel liner case. Put it in the freezer so it can cool off and voila! you have your new lip gloss 🙂

How To Make Your Beauty Products Last Longer

Squeezing_last_dropHere at TheBeautyPlace.com, we know beauty products can be pricey so we want to share some tips on how to get the most out of your favorite makeup and skincare products.  After all, everyone loves to save a little money!

Tip #1 – Use moisturizer & primer on your face before applying makeup. Using either of these products underneath foundation will ensure long lasting coverage.  Added Benefit: it won’t dry out or crack your makeup.  You can also use an eyeshadow primer to keep eye makeup in place all day or night long.

Tip #2 – Moisturize Again! Similarly, moisturizer helps maintain a glowing tan longer whether it is from the sun or from a bottle.  The added moisture on the skin locks the bronze in place for a few extra days.

Tip #3 – Add olive oil to conditioners. When it comes to haircare, adding some olive oil to your daily conditioner, or deep conditioning hair masque can stretch the product out for a few more uses.

Tip #4 – Spray perfume in pulse spots.  Make that yummy spritz of perfume go the extra mile by spraying it in the correct spots.  The back of the knees, behind the ears, wrists and décolletage emanate heat from your skin and sends the scent into the air around you.

Tip #5 – Use top coat.  Splurging for a manicure during the holiday season can become more of a drag than a pleasure when it chips in a couple days. Applying a layer of clear top coat to nails every other day ensures a longer lasting manicure.

Quick Beauty Tip – Cover Dark, Under Eye Circles

Dark circles under your eyes are a sign of stress, sleep deprivation, partying too hard or all of the above! There are plenty of products that hide the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, but they only help if you apply them properly. Apply under eye concealer in a triangle under your eyes stopping near the end of your nose. Then blend. This makeup technique is way more effective than the dots we were taught to make around the eye! quicktip-conceal-dark-circles

Quick Beauty Tip – No Mess Mascara Application

Next time someone wants to give you their unwanted business card, don’t decline or toss it! Keep a collection of business cards in your vanity for mascara application. Since mascara should be applied last as a finishing touch,  it often can create a smudgy mess. Avoid this by placing a business card right up against your lash line. Apply mascara as usual, only the excess makeup will smudge onto the card instead of your perfectly shadowed eyelids! quicktip-business-card-lashes
