You’ve heard that phrase many times before, but this time we mean it in a totally different way. While you’re having fun in the sun & sipping on a Margarita, or Corona with lime, you’re putting your skin at serious risk. The month of May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, and we want to be sure that all of our readers take extra precautions to protect their skin.
The combination of citrus on your skin that is exposed to the sun can cause a severe chemical burn. The reaction is called phytophotodermatitis. The severity can vary based on exposure, but we also like the phrase “better safe than sorry”.
One of the worst parts about this scary situation, is that you cannot feel it happening. 24 hours after exposure, your skin will blister, and trust us it is PAINFUL! Not to mention, the burns can leave permanent scars.
To prevent this painful reaction, wash any skin exposed to citrus immediately before returning to the sunshine. This includes the sides of your mouth!
Now pass the guacamole! Ole!

We follow beauty regimens and even drop a pretty penny on the latest beauty products that promise instant fixes to our skin woes. Most of us wish for our skin to radiate a healthy and natural glow. How about we set up the groundwork for great skin care and choose beauty products that assist in correcting the problems we can’t fix?
Tip 1: Stay hydrated. Did you know about 70% of our body is made up of water? Drinking water is very important for the health of our skin. If you are not drinking water, how can you expect your skin to look healthy? Imagine a plant that does not get enough water. It starts to wilt, and as soon as you water it, it looks alive again. That is exactly what our skin goes through. Drink water and skin will look healthier, less dull. A hydrated body can help prevent dry skin!
Tip 2: Wear sunscreen. The sun not only dries out skin, it causes freckles, wrinkles, and in time, dark spots to form! Our skin is a clean canvas that needs protection from the elements. You wear a coat to protect against the cold, carry an umbrella to protect against the rain, use sunscreen to protect the skin you wear for a lifetime!
Tip 3: Exfoliate once or twice weekly. Enlarged pores are visible because our skin works hard! Pores expand to absorb extra oil, dirt and debris you do not wash off. Exfoliating washes off the extra stuff your skin does not need. Consider a skin cleansing system like Clarisonic. It uses a rotating brush head to clean skin making washcloths obsolete! If a Clarisonic is not an investment you are ready for right now, June Jacobs Perfect Pumpkin Enzyme Polish decongests pores, purging them of unnecessary oils. The pumpkin extracts exfoliate, brighten, and make your skin look fresh! In as little as two weeks, you will notice smaller pores and smoother skin. It is really worth a try!
Tip 4: Moisturize. Day and Night. Skin that is moisturized stays smooth and supple preventing premature lines and wrinkles. If the moisturizer has an SPF, even better! Our favorite? Pevonia Botanica Age-Defying Marine Collagen Cream. It contains squalene and marine collagen to infuse skin with moisture and protect it with UV filters. This anti-aging face moisturizer will soften fine lines and wrinkles.
Tip 5: Eat fruit. Cantaloupe is perfect. It contains a great amount of vitamin C, a known collagen producer! Strawberries, mangoes, pineapple all have tons of great good for your skin vitamins and antioxidants. It’s perfectly okay to dip the strawberries in chocolate!
Tip 6: Sleep. At least 8 hours. Your body “fixes” itself when you sleep. Think about it, if you don’t recharge the battery on your phone, your phone will not turn on. If your body doesn’t rest, you will have less energy, your immune system will not fight as much bugs, and your skin will look dull and older!
Tip 7: Supplement. If you eat all your fruits and veggies, great! If you don’t, a supplement with vitamins and minerals gives your body the tools it needs to regenerate itself. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that keeps away bugs like the flu and produces collagen which makes your skin look plump. There are supplements just for keeping your skin looking healthy. Here is one: Perricone MD Skin Clear Dietary Supplements. It contains a long list of great skin clearing ingredients: vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin D, and omega 3 are just a few.
Follow these tips to see smooth, healthy looking skin results in as little as 2 weeks!
Our skin is on display for the entire world to see, and it speaks a language of its own. When you look at someone up close, what do you notice? Our wrinkles, skin texture, and pores clearly express how we do skin care. For example, enlarged pores are small indentations that look like small craters. These small craters can collect oil, dirt, and debris making pores appear large. It can be tempting to empty your purse and get this situation fixed right away, but end up with less money because the products often end up being ineffective. Here are the causes of enlarged pores and skin care products popular for reducing them.
Remember when you were a child; your skin was smooth and soft? When you hit puberty, hormonal changes caused oil production to skyrocket and pores enlarged to handle how much oil was being created. They stay enlarged for years, unless you do something about it, and when women hit menopause, hormonal changes cause pores to shrink back to how they were back in childhood. Enlarged pores are most likely to appear on forehead, nose and chin. Why? Because of improper skin care, oily skin, smoking or sun damage.
First, we know properly cleansing skin and decongesting pores is the best way to keep them from absorbing oils and bacteria. The DDF Revolve 400 X Micro Polishing System guarantees pores are left squeaky clean by providing 8X better exfoliation than a scrub alone, and it also allows for microdermabrasion treatment at home! Dermatologists recommend medical treatments like microdermabrasion to treat enlarged pores. This technique rejuvenates skin with tiny microcrystal particles that remove excess oil and dead skin that accumulates in enlarged pores. An added benefit of microdermabrasion is that it stimulates the growth of collagen!
Steaming will soften debris and is incredibly easy to do this at home. Fill a bowl with hot water and let your pores absorb the steam. Apply a face mask immediately after steaming. An effective pore-purging clay masque like June Jacobs Pore Purifying Mud Masque is ideal because this masque dries after application. It contains antibacterial extracts, antioxidants, and anti-aging ingredients to pull everything that does not belong inside a pore. Thus allowing the pore to breathe and with time (since you will be applying this mud masque regularly) tighten and look less noticeable! It is important for a face mask routine to be formed so that this vital procedure is never skipped or forgotten.
For everyday cleansing of oily skin, Dr. Brandt Pores No More Cleanser refines skin texture with salicylic acid to wash away impurities and tea tree oil and willow bark to soothe skin. It is non-drying, clears blackheads and prevents breakouts and prevents pores from clogging!
You now know why enlarged pores appear. Can you see them?
Hair removal methods can cause skin concerns due to the stress caused to follicles and skin. Tend Skin promises to reduce and treat major skin concerns like inflammation, razor burn and ingrown hairs with formulas that include moisturizers and antibacterial ingredients. You will notice immediate results after hair removal from reduced irritation or no red bumps at all to skin that is clear and smooth in as little as 3 uses.
Tend Skin Solution is a serum applied after shaving, waxing, tweezing, laser hair removal or electrolysis. The solution contains natural ingredients and salycilic acid to prevent ingrown hair from forming. If ingrown hairs exist, the salicylic acid acid acts as an exfoliator, working to lift the ingrown hair.
Tend Skin Moisturizing Body Lotion is for use after Tend Skin Solution application. Certain skin types may find that Tend Skin causes a drying effect, most likely due to the exfoliating and antibacterial ingredients. It is a body moisturizer, locking in moisture on the skin’s surface using Sweet White Lupin. Its formula provides continued skin protection to prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps.
Tend Skin Air Shave Gel is a no lather shaving gel. It moisturizes skin and reduces friction that causes ingrown hair, skin irritation, and razor burn. It has been formulated to work with wet or dry electric shavers. The air shave gel should be applied to moist skin with hand, let sit for 20 seconds, and shave immediately.
Tend Skin Refillable Roll On is a travel-size TSA approved container. It allows for Tend Skin Solution to be applied hands-free avoiding unnecessary contact with fingers. For cost effective purposes, the roll-on method was created to avoid wasting solution on a cotton ball. “This is perfect for travel because the large bottle of Tend Skin solution is not TSA approved. The roll-on mechanism is so convenient because you can swipe on measured amounts, saving the skin care product for long-term use,” stated Rebecca.
Many of us have a love and hate relationship with our styling tools. They help us achieve straight, curly or wavy hairstyles, but since flat irons and curling wands can reach temperatures of up to 450 degrees they can easily damage our hair in under a week! Damaged hair is frizzy, dry, and with split ends. Is your mane showing signs of damage? Follow our styling tips on proper thermal styling, and display your gorgeous hair with pride.
Tip 1: A styling tool uses heat to manipulate hair and shape it, but hair is not meant to withstand 450 degrees worth of heat. Tune your flat iron to 410 degrees. At this temperature it is still really hot to wave or straighten any hair type.
Tip 2: Do you know heat sucks moisture out of hair? When hair is dry it is tight and can break easy, when hair has moisture it is flexible, and tougher to break. Think about this next time you curl or blow dry hair, and reach for a silk-infused hair serum like CHI Silk Infusion. Its alcohol-free formula will not dry out hair instead it will leave it incredibly soft. How does it protect hair from heat? It coats every hair strand with a silk ingredient that delivers strength and shine with no build-up. Another hair serum that does the same work is BioSilk Silk Therapy.
Tip 3: Unless your flat iron is a wet-to-dry iron do not iron damp hair! A sizzling sound does not mean it is working. It means your hair is frying!
Tip 4: Any styling tool that features ceramic, tourmaline or ionic technology is perfect. These really smooth surfaces are usually smoothed in a way that prevents frizz and damage.
Tip 5: Give your hair a break a day or two. Second day hair still looks great!
Follow all of these tips so you can use your flat iron guilt-free! If you are looking for styling products to create any look go to TheBeautyPlace.com and find the beauty industry’s top brands at affordable prices!
